LED: A Light Emitting Diode, a semi conductor device with two terminals allowing the flow of current in one direction only and it emits light when activated. So what does this all mean? The talk around town and the world (besides politics) is most definitely about LED’s. The lighting world has changed drastically, there is no wonder we have questions about it. My own wording for LED’s is “Light … [Read more...]
Smith’s Red & White
Charlotte and Dick Forester from Richmond told us about this special place – Smith’s Red & White in the little town of Dortches, near Rocky Mount. Each summer on their way to Topsail Beach, Charlotte and Dick pulled off I-95 at the Hwy. 43 Exit and stopped at this grocery store, where they loaded their trunk and coolers with beach food. With all the great places in Richmond to buy food, why … [Read more...]
See Ya’ Later Alligator
Each generation has its own language and teenage Boomers were no different. Highly influenced by fast cars and maintaining total cool at all times, young Boomers created a vocabulary all their own, and interestingly, many of the terms are still in use today. To be in “fat city”, for example, was to be in great shape”. A “drag” was an extremely boring individual. The “fuzz” were policemen and … [Read more...]
Bluebirds: Getting Ready To Nest
This past fall and winter, we have been blessed with 7 bluebirds – one pair and one small flock of five. Each day, they visit my feeder with the sunflower hearts, and from the looks of things, we will again have a nesting pair of bluebirds in the birdhouse on the fence, overlooking my small garden. Last week, I saw a squirrel scampering along on the top of the fence when, suddenly, he was … [Read more...]
Butternut Squash Soup
Nancy was sick. She had a terrible cold, and when my wife is not feeling up to snuff, she wants soup. Naturally, I made a run to Kroger’s and loaded a cart with Campbell’s Tomato and Chicken Noodle Soup, but I also saw a butternut squash in the produce section that needed a home, and I bought it as well. I knew Nancy often ordered Squash Soup when it was on a restaurant menu and I decided to make … [Read more...]
Tanyard Time
The Greens at Tanyard Golf Course in Louisa has everything I look for in a golf course. The management is friendly and accommodating. It’s an inexpensive place to play, it’s challenging and plays quickly. Best of all, it’s just a plain, fun place to play golf. Even those guys and gals who can’t hit it a country mile can play medium and short irons to the greens on most par 4’s. Last Sunday … [Read more...]
Light: What Is It?
And Why Do We Need It? By Nancy Brewer Why do many like dimmers for their dining room chandeliers? Is it to hide a soiled tablecloth? No, of course not. It is to set the mood. The same is true when we use candles. They present a soft glow, which makes us feel romantic and relaxed. When going to the beach, a bright sunny day excites us and we are able to think of all sorts of fun … [Read more...]
Diggs Seafood
About 20 years ago, four of us headed for West Point to fish for croakers in the Mattaponi River. Arriving in town early in the morning, my comrades stopped at a place called Diggs Seafood. I assumed they were going inside to buy bait, but it was lunch they were after. “You’ve never eaten at Diggs?” someone asked, incredulously. “Nope. Why?” I responded, as it seemed like a little … [Read more...]
Tuna Time
There are Bluefin Tuna out there when the boats can get to them. A 447pound Bluefin was caught out of Pirate’s Cove over the weekend. At Nags Head, nothing is happening in the surf. The water temperature is 46 degrees. Some hardy anglers on Jennette’s Pier were catching all the skates they wanted. One keeper puppy drum was also caught at Jennette’s. Hatteras Surf Last … [Read more...]
Virginia Cougars?
The Virginia Game Department says that cougars, mountain lions, do not exist in Virginia. Period. End of argument. But….. There are at least three hunters in Louisa County who disagree. Sherman Shifflett, a frequent contributor to CvilleBuzz, said that the hunters saw a cougar in the Ware’s X community, not far from Lake Anna. The hunters were using beagles to make a drive near an old … [Read more...]
