By David Hart They were called “frankenfish” and “fishzilla,” as if they were created in the laboratory of a mad scientist. They even morphed into a mythological creature that could walk across dry land and survive out of water for days. The hysteria around snakeheads also spawned a rash of B-list movies. One included gruesome attacks by roving packs of six-foot fish that devoured swimmers, … [Read more...]
I Saw A Bee!
I was mowing the grass last week so my wife would let me play golf the next day and I saw a honeybee. A real, live honeybee. Not a bumblebee or another pretender, but a honeybee. Last year, I didn’t see a single one in my yard. Honeybees, as most are aware, have been having a hard time of it in recent years. No one knows for sure, but their decline in numbers has been blames on … [Read more...]

Staying Cool at Swanannoa
Last Wednesday a week ago, it was 94 degrees in Charlottesville. On Afton mountain, it was 83 and that’s where my three golf amigos and I teed it up. We played Swanannoa Country Club. We had a fun round and stayed cool. I’ve played much nicer golf courses than Swannanoa Country Club on Afton Mountain, but I don’t think I have played any more enjoyable courses. Swannanoa is an easy … [Read more...]
Yummy, It’s Yummly
I don’t know how I got hooked up with this website, but a recipe I saw in a pop-up ad caught my attention. The site was “Yummly”. They offered to send me weekly recipes, so I said, “What the heck, if I don’t like it, I’ll sign off.” Boy do I like it. I read each recipe and have used several already. This is a great site for all sorts of “Yummy Yummlies”. Below is one of their recipes for No … [Read more...]
Feeding The Pigeons
I was born in Raleigh, NC and spent my early years there with my mom, my grandmother (Mama Ida), an aunt and an uncle. My father had been killed in the war, just before I was born, and it would be a few more years before mom met and married Daddy George, who became like a real Daddy to me. But while in Raleigh, one of my great joys and memories was feeding the pigeons in the park on the state … [Read more...]
‘Gills at Lake Orange
Lake Orange offers some of the best bluegill fishing in the state. The rich waters at Orange grow big ‘gills and the clean, clear water makes them especially good to eat. Now is the time to catch some. The big males are guarding the beds. Popping bugs and wet flies are proven bluegill catchers, but a juicy red wiggler or a fat mealworm will also trigger strikes. Lake Orange offers boat rentals … [Read more...]
Stripers at Kill Devil Hills
TW’s reports: The big news on the northern beaches of the Outer Banks was Mark Gwaltney’s 38-inch striper that weighed 24 pounds. On Wednesday, the SW winds were at 9 and the water temp was 61 degrees. The Little Bridge on the Nags Head/Manteo causeway reported … [Read more...]
Pop Up Parchment
I have recently discovered the joy of parchment paper, not just for baking cookies and using beneath other objects that stick to the pan, but for anything you’d like to cook that makes cleaning up an easier task. So I have been burning through the parchment paper. A few weeks back – completely out of the non-stick stuff – I saw an interesting product beside the normal rolls of parchment paper. … [Read more...]
