One of our stand-by restaurants these days is Bonefish Grill. It used to be Outback, but when they moved to a larger location here in Charlottesville, they outgrew their wait staff. The service suffered, we had a bad experience and we looked for another spot to eat on short notice. We have eaten at Bonefish off and on since they opened about 10 years ago, but without reservations, we … [Read more...]
Callaway Chrome Soft Balls
I am usually not picky about golf balls. As long as they don’t have “XXX” on the sides, I’ll play them. Didn’t really think it made any difference except for the prestige factor. But last Christmas, my favorite and only son, Jimmie, knew that his Dad was low on golf balls and he gave me a couple dozen Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls. They are the finest golf balls I have ever played. … [Read more...]
Learning About Lighting
Meet Coleman Spencer, our Summer Intern at Nancy B’s House of Lights. Coleman is in college and home for the summer, learning lots about lighting, assembling and hanging fixtures. He gladly tackles any challenge and thinks of it as an opportunity to learn more. One thing we all learned is that Coleman often does not need a ladder. His 6’7″ frame allows him to reach the fixtures with which … [Read more...]
Roasted Cauliflower
As comedian Ron White once said when approached by a police officer while drunk at a bar, “I had the right to remain silent. I just didn’t have the ability.” Ron subsequently gave the cop some lip and spent the night in the pokey. Similarly, I know how to lose weight, but I often lack the ability. Losing weight is most difficult if you like to cook, eat out occasionally … [Read more...]
2017 Spring Gobbler Harvest
This wasn’t a good spring to be a wild turkey. A lot of the bearded birds ended up on dining room tables as opposed to finding the hens of their dreams. Recent reports from the Game Department announced a near record harvest. The summary is below. A total of 18,860 turkeys were harvested in Virginia during the 2017 spring gobbler season - 9% higher than the 2016 harvest. This year’s … [Read more...]

A Bed of Bunnies
About a week ago, Nancy and I were in the back yard enjoying one of those rare, non-raining afternoons and saw a rabbit near our patio. The rabbit kept eating and stuffing her mouth with grass. Her cheeks were puffed out so much that it looked like she had bushy whiskers. We could tell we were disturbing her, so we remained quiet and watched. In a few minutes, the doe (female rabbit) squeezed … [Read more...]
Remember Hand Signals?
I saw a guy using a hand signal in a car last week. Except it wasn’t the textbook signal seen often in old DMV manuals for driving exams. It involved a middle finger and some swearing words I had not heard in a while. I think the guy was mildly perturbed at the teenager in front of him who had texted his way through two light changes. But, believe or not, Boomers used to use hand … [Read more...]
The Croaker Bite Is On
Virginia Saltwater The croaker bite is on, all the way from the piers of Virginia Beach to the upper reaches of the tidal rivers. Flounder have been hit or miss with many fish below the 17-inch minimum. Cobia have moved in but are off limits until June. Spanish mackerel have made an early move into Commonwealth waters. Whiting have been hitting in the lower bay as have grey trout. Looks like an … [Read more...]
