I spend a good bit of my time at Lights Out, a discount lighting store in Ruckersville. When there are no customers, I type. When customers come in, I sell, and we have the best bargains going in the lighting business. Each January, my wife Nancy and I go to the Dallas market. She may buy 100 new fixtures for her showroom, Nancy B’s House of Lights. When they come in, we take down … [Read more...]
Red, Red, Red!
Well, my bluebirds changed their minds. Two weeks ago, it looked like the hen was on her nest for the third time this summer. Then, apparently, she said “To hell with this. Seven baby bluebirds is enough. Let’s go shopping”, or whatever bluebirds do in the summer when they are not raising chicks. So now I am the proud owner of about 9,000 mealworms. I ordered another 10,000 when I … [Read more...]
What’s New for 2017–2018
New laws in Virginia always take effect on July 1. So do game and fish laws. There were several notable changes made to the hunting regulations in our state and they are listed below. A resident junior bear license (ages 12–15) is now available for $8.50. Blaze pink may now be worn where there is a blaze colored requirement. All areas that had an August or September … [Read more...]
Marsha’s Potato Casserole
We had a family reunion last summer that drew around 30 uncles, cousins, nieces, brothers, sisters, grand kids and dogs. For one of the evening meals, we had barbeque catered through a local pit master. The other meal, the brothers and sisters chipped in with homemade dishes and my sister in law, Marsha Boggess (also the hostess for the gathering), prepared two huge platters of a potato … [Read more...]
Double Your Impact
An anonymous donor will now MATCH your financial gift to the Charlottesville Municipal Band. Through the end of this year, contributions up to $500,000, will in essence be doubled. A $50 gift becomes $100. A $1,000 contribution becomes $2,000. With these gifts, it is hoped that the band will be able to create an endowment sufficient to carry them well into their second century with … [Read more...]
89c A Gallon
I paid 89 cents a gallon at the gas pump this week. Filled my Jeep up for less than $20, and the tank was bone dry. How? I do most of my shopping at Kroger’s, and if you buy enough groceries, they give you a kick back on gas at the pump. I don’t know exactly how it works, but they keep track of your purchase when you use your Kroger Card. Sometimes, I just get a dime off per … [Read more...]
Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies
Wanna really indulge yourself, or maybe put a few children on a cloud of pure elation? Then make a batch of Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies. I saw this recipe someplace recently, and since I do a little cooking for a family with three kids, I thought I’d give it a shot. It’s really good and quite a treat for any choc-aholic. You start with a package of Thin Oreos. Don’t know … [Read more...]
Let’s Go Surfing!
Heading to the Outer Banks? Come on in, the water is fine. At least that’s what the sharks say. This 8 foot Tiger Sand Shark was beached by a lucky (?) angler recently at Corolla. Hmmm! Maybe the pool at the hotel would be a better place to take a dip. As for fishing, it’s been good. TW’s says it was cloudy out, but hot, waves 1 to 2 feet this Wednesday with a water temp of yes 77 … [Read more...]
We Owned the Streets
Today, if you’re driving through a neighborhood and spot a child riding a bicycle (wearing a helmet and knee pads of course), the mom or dad who are always with the child has a conniption fit to get the biker out of the road and behind a hedgerow as quickly as possible. They are seemingly afraid that the approaching motorist will chase down the child and run him over. It wasn’t always … [Read more...]
Summer Fun in Saltwater
By Dr. Julie Ball June represents the first official month of summer, and the saltwater fishing scene is picking up momentum. Cobia is one of the most anticipated summer species in the Chesapeake Bay. These stealthy, brown fish are making a strong showing in Bay waters, with some fish weighing over 70-pounds. Both chumming and sight casting are rewarding anglers. Although red … [Read more...]
