When I was a boy, Mom always had a bottle of buttermilk in the refrigerator. Sometimes she drank it straight up, not my cup of tea, but she used it frequently when baking. Occasionally, I or my wife Nancy use a recipe that calls for buttermilk, like a cobbler she baked recently. Buttermilk is extremely versatile and I’m convinced there should be a pint or so of buttermilk in every chef’s … [Read more...]

Fans Part I
By Nancy Brewer Whew, it’s been really hot and muggy this summer. That’s one reason the breeze from a fan is so welcoming. We have fans in most every room of our home and I don’t think that’s a southern thing. More and more, our builders install fan boxes in the bedrooms and living spaces of their homes. They too know just how important it is to offer their clients this much needed and enjoyed … [Read more...]
Weeds Be Gone
A couple years ago, some strange, weed-like grass popped up in our back yard. I’m pretty sure it’s an invasive plant called Dallis Grass. I see it on golf courses, sometimes, on tee boxes, fairways and occasionally greens. The stuff grows in coarse clumps. It’s nasty. I don’t know where it came from or how it got there, but I wanted it gone. Normally, I don’t mind a few weeds I my yard. In … [Read more...]
Timberwood Grill
Last Saturday evening we found ourselves without an entrée in our fridge (by design), so Nancy and I decided to go out to eat. Nothing fancy, we thought. Maybe Lord Hardwicke’s? We had not eaten there since they closed their doors on Emmett Street, but there was one north of town. Or so we thought. When we arrived at their former location at a strip mall in Greene County, there was no Lord … [Read more...]

Speedy was there when you ate too much, drank too, much, had indigestion, heartburn, stomach aches, acid reflux, aches and pains, bad colds and especially a hangover. He was our friend when we had too much of any good thing. Marketing - such as the promotion of Little Speedy - has played a big role in … [Read more...]
Crappie Time at Lake Orange
Perhaps fall is just around the corner, or at least the Lake Orange crappie think it may be. It was a good week for the speckled slabs at Orange. Successful anglers dunked minnows in 10 to 12 foot depths for some nice stringers of fish. Darrell Kennedy at Anglers Landing says the water temperature is in the upper 70s to lower 80s and the lake is stained. Bass are being caught on … [Read more...]
