In our current series on fall golf in Central Virginia, this week’s destination is Old Trail, at the very foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Crozet. Old Trail has had some ups and downs in the 15 or so years it has been around. When it first opened, it was awfully difficult. The course designer wanted almost a links course, with lots of high grass and grown up areas. Problem was, with all … [Read more...]
KS Hair Salon
The outside sign at Albemarle Square said, “Barber”, that’s it. I was intrigued, but never stopped by. But one day I was in a hurry and didn’t have time to make an appointment with the girl who had been styling my hair, so I gave the shop a try. All the barbers were Chinese and I wondered if I would get one of those “Moe” haircuts. I figured it would eventually grow out, so I took a chair. It … [Read more...]
On the Road to Sunset Beach
Cowboys used to ride off into the sunset. I don’t know where they were heading, west I suppose. That’s where the sun sets on most afternoons. I know of a place where the sunset is to the east. East, as on the Eastern Shore. It’s Sunset Beach Inn near Cape Charles on the Virginia’s Pristine Eastern Shore. It has become a favored mini-vacation destination for Nancy and me. If we’ve got a couple, … [Read more...]
Kielbasa Sliders
Sliders are all the rage these days at restaurants and catered events. Basically, sliders are mini-burgers. They’re smaller and you have to eat more to fill up, but they make good “finger food” at parties and get-togethers. The smaller, slider buns are readily available at all grocery stores. But sliders don’t have to be burgers. I had a salmon slider recently that was excellent and … [Read more...]
Mow, Don’t Rake
They do it every year. They fall off the trees. Leaves. Every single one, which means get out the rake and get to work. Or not? For the past few years I have eschewed the rake and leaf blower and cranked up my lawnmower instead. Not only is this far easier than raking and bagging, it’s better for your yard. By mowing a few times each fall – and I don’t use a bagger – the leaves are shredded … [Read more...]
Empty Lots and Football
If it was fall, we played football. After school, we took an available-players inventory, gathered up any and all warm bodies, and headed for the vacant lot two doors from my house on Court Street, in Lewisburg, WV. Our neighbor, Paul Jones owned the lot and never had it developed. He delighted in seeing us enjoy it. I think every neighborhood should have at least one empty lot for … [Read more...]
Fall Favorites: Ingleside
Virginia is blessed with a four season climate and perhaps the most spectacular of all the seasons – color wise – is fall, which is right now, which is also a great time to play a little golf and take in the scenery. In the next few weeks – as if us golfers needed more incentive to tee it up – we’ll take a look at some of the most scenic courses in Central Virginia. Right near the top … [Read more...]
BJs Restaurant & Brewhouse
My golf match ran a little late so when I arrived home at 6:30, Nancy said, “Let’s eat out.” She’s a talking thing - talked me right into it! We both decided that we didn’t want anything fancy, maybe just a sandwich and she suggested BJs, a new restaurant in Charlottesville, right across from the Post Office on 29 North. Getting into all that new commercial development near … [Read more...]
Cabbage Steaks
I mentioned extra cabbage hanging around the house in a recent article on coleslaw. Nancy Jackson, premiere Realtor in Saluda and Master Chef in her kitchen, had an answer for either new or leftover cabbage. Cabbage steaks! Here’s how Nancy does it: Take a head of cabbage and cut it crosswise into half-inch “steaks”. Sprinkle olive oil on top, add a dash of garlic powder, some cracked pepper … [Read more...]
Old Favorite (Lamps)
Yow-Za, Yow-Za! Where do you think this lamp originated? Our lamp repairman, George, is wonderful! He treats our customer’s lamps as if they were his own, taking great care to repair these beauties and give them new life. You see, while an old lamp may look as if it is ready for a retirement home, George is able to revive it with new sockets, wiring, cords, dimmers and innards. We all have … [Read more...]
