Boomers look back on the week after Christmas as a time to enjoy Santa’s bounty. We had new Flexible Flyer sleds, in case it snowed. We had Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse watches to set. We likely had a few new 45 records from Top Ten artists. We had Scrabble and Monopoly games to play. We had new Saddle oxford shoes and argyle sweaters. We had batteries for our transistor radios and some … [Read more...]
Rockfish Season Goes Out With a Bang
Virginia anglers would certainly love a few more weeks to wrestle with some 50-pound plus rockfish, but the season ends this Sunday. With the colder water dipping into the lower 50’s, huge schools of bunker bunched up and anglers watched for the birds to direct them to rockfish ranging from schoolies to 60-pounders. Hopefully, the ocean fishing striper season will take up the slack, … [Read more...]
Winter Practice at The Highlands
Another golf year is in the rear view mirror as cold weather settles in for a few months. But it sure would be nice to practice up for next spring – correct that ugly slice, work on your lob wedge and other clubs. This is all possible at the Highlands Practice Facility in Ruckersville. Highlands offers a great place to practice even in winter. The tee stations are covered and … [Read more...]
Big Bucks, Smaller Kill
The word on the hunting streets is that while the deer kill may be down a little in numbers, the quality of deer has been excellent. There are have been some really nice animals harvested to date. Last year’s mild weather and solid mast crop, no doubt, has helped in raising healthy animals. But because of the recent efforts of the Game Department to control populations by a generous … [Read more...]
Bird Bath De-Icer
A reader of CvilleBuzz recently asked my recommendation of bird bath de-icers. I have used several varieties over the years and have found that the Model C-50 Bird-Bath De-Icer by Farm Innovators is by far the best. The others, though advertised as highly efficient, don’t do the job when the going gets really cold. And several take up unnecessary space. The Premium Cast 150-Watt … [Read more...]
Municipal Band Fully Funded
Two years ago, the various Scrooge’s on the Charlottesville City Council stopped all funding to the Charlottesville Municipal Band. With the band offering free concerts to the public and no obvious means of support, things looked bad for the band’s future. Then, an anonymous source said they would match any contributions up to a half-million dollars to fund the band. Band Director … [Read more...]
Oh Christmas Tree
Christmas is over. It’s time to un-decorate the tree, drag it out to the curb and let the trash guys do their thing. But not so fast! A Christmas tree has many uses after the holiday season is over. For one, it makes ideal cover for small birds as they face the coming winter. On a few occasions, I have convinced my wife to let me drag the tree to my vegetable garden and remain there … [Read more...]
Oil-Less Turkey Fryers
So you have a gift card to burn and maybe you’d like a new addition to your cooking arsenal? May I suggest an oil-less turkey fryer. A deep fried turkey in peanut oil is delicious, but cleaning up all the oil and grease is no fun. But with a Big Easy Oil-less Turkey Fryer from Char Broil, there is no oil and greasy mess clean up required. The turkey comes out juicy inside and crispy … [Read more...]

Sgt. Dawson
It’s funny how things or people from the past pop into your mind. Last week, an incident happened to me that triggered such a memory. I didn’t have a paring knife that would slice warm butter and I like to tinker around the kitchen. By gum, I thought, I am going to go buy myself a sharp knife. So I went to Home Goods and tracked down the meanest, scariest looking knife on the … [Read more...]
