I have always been a little leery of Omaha Steaks. If you get on their mailing list, they will pester you to death to buy their products. Sure, their steaks are good, but it always seemed like a bait-and-switch deal, buy a few steaks and they toss in all the cheap stuff. Well, I changed my mind. What I thought was the “cheap stuff” turned out to be the best of all. For Fathers Day, my son … [Read more...]
Coonskin Caps and Hula Hoops
The year 1955 was not a good one to be a raccoon. In fact, if you were such a masked critter, chances were pretty good you’d lose your tail and skin to a fad called “Coonskin Caps.” In the mid-1950’s, Walt Disney was a dominant program on TV. Families gathered around their Zenith, Philco or RCA black and white sets on a Saturday night, set up the trays for TV Dinners and watched whatever Disney … [Read more...]
Big Specks Are Biting
By Dr. Julie Ball The speckled trout scene continues to develop, and the size of the fish continues to grow. Most backwater locations are producing respectable fish, with jigs, plastics and Mirro-Lures attracting plenty of strikes. Rudee Inlet, Little Creek Inlet, Lynnhaven Inlet and the Poquoson flats are productive speck areas, presenting a surprisingly nice class of trout. This could be a … [Read more...]
The Big Lakes – Good Fishing
It’s amazing what 3-inches of rain in one night can do. Trout streams at a trickle are now running strong, lakes with bare mud showing on the banks are full and happy and fall fishing looks promising. Lake Anna Huge schools of baitfish are roaming the lake. Schooling bass and stripers have taken notice. Hot spots have been the mouth of Contrary Creek, Rose Valley and the area around Jetts … [Read more...]
Greene Hills Golf
Golf is special anytime. But tee it up on a clear autumn day in Central Virginia with mountains and changing leaves in the background, and it doesn’t get much better. One of the great courses to get in a round of fall golf is Greene Hills, outside Stanardsville. If you like beautiful, rolling hills at the foot of the Blue Ridge, you’ll love Greene Hills, a semi-private club, designed by … [Read more...]
To Stake or Not To Stake
That is the question! Do you stake tomatoes in the spring or just let them do their thing. This summer, I put up an initial stake, then pretty much let my tomato plants decide where to go. Things looked bleak for my tomato crop with an early raccoon invasion and then a drought, but the plants survived, thrived and I ended up with a decent yield of tomatoes. In fact, my vines are still producing. … [Read more...]
Chuck & Veggie Soup
Tis the season for soup – chilly nights, crisp mornings and autumn leaves tumbling from the trees. So it’s soup time. You can make soup from most any organic material, but I pretty much stick to the basics – chili, chicken and vegetable beef. When cooking up a batch of vegetable beef soup, there are as many recipes as there are chefs. Everybody has his or her favorite, and it’s hard to go … [Read more...]
Boomers and Recycling
Recycling is very fashionable these days among the younger generation, which speaks reverently about reducing carbon footprints, promoting alternative energy sources and buying most any product with the prefix “green”. While today’s generation takes great pride in recycling an aluminum can or two. Boomers didn’t recycle cans, they physically returned milk bottles, soda bottles and even beer … [Read more...]
Fall Fishing is Coming
Capt. Steve Chaconas says that moving lures on the Potomac River will find fish over grass and on hard cover. “The water is cooling into the mid 60s,” he says. “It will be cooling into the mid 60s and lows in the 40s with sunshine going into the weekend.” Tides will be rising until midday, perfect for Lucky Craft G-Splash poppers. Make long casts on 12-pound test Gamma Copoly line. Vary … [Read more...]
Stripers Going Strong
This is shaping up to be an excellent striper season, both in Carolina and Virginia waters. Down at Oregon Inlet, Capt. Reese Stecher and fellow captains have been slamming the stripers. They are even catching some larger fish (28-inches plus) and that fishery will only improve. Reese continues to catch puppy drum and speckled trout, often right along wit the stripers. There are still two full … [Read more...]
