Asparagus is good and good for you, but some find it boring. A couple weeks back, I printed an Asparagus/Green Pea recipe that many tried and enjoyed. Yummly, a great on-line recipe source, offers this version. Asparagus With Bacon & Mushrooms 1 tablespoon oil 5 bacon slices (chopped) 4 garlic cloves (peeled and … [Read more...]
Red Bellied Woodpeckers
Looks like we’ll have a pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers nesting in a cavity of an old white maple in the back of our yard. I saw them swoop that way this morning and there are lots of hollow places in that old tree from which to choose a nesting site. Many people confuse the Red-bellied Woodpecker with the less common Red-headed Woodpeckers. Red-bellied Woodpeckers do have red heads, but not … [Read more...]
Spring Turkey Season Underway
It’s time to gobble! The Virginia Spring Gobbler Season opened last Saturday, April 14 and runs through May 19. Hunters may harvest one bird daily and a total of three for the entire year. Only bearded birds are legal game – some hens have beards. Turkeys may be hunted with any modern firearms, plus archery tackle and muzzleloaders. Hunters may employ decoys and blinds but it is unlawful to … [Read more...]
Dogwood Festival Spring Concert
Mother Nature is not quite certain that it’s spring yet – with 80 degree afternoons one day and light snowfall the next. But the Charlottesville Municipal Band has declared it to be spring. They are performing their annual Dogwood Festival Spring Concert on April 22 from 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM. The performance is free and will be held at the Dickinson Theater, Piedmont Virginia Community College, … [Read more...]
Creasy Greens: A Southern Specialty
Here’s a crash course in “Suthern”. “Bless your heart, dahlin”, “Y’all come back, heah”, “Wudden that be nise?” “Can you innerduce me to Bee-hill?” and “Please pass the Creasy Greens.” Creasy Greens? Absolutely. It’s a Classic Suthern dish, and by gum, Nancy and I are going to plant creasy greens in our garden this spring. For you Yankees out there who have never heard of creasy greens, … [Read more...]
“Hoochy” Cucci’s
A great Italian restaurant in Covington? No way! Yes, way! It’s called Cucci’s. I’ve eaten there on several occasions and the food is authentic Italian and very good. Cucci’s is a popular local hangout. The one-acre parking lot stays packed, except on Sundays, when they are closed. Cucci’s prepares their food fresh and daily, including fresh breads. They offer a wide selection of Italian … [Read more...]
Rappahannock Shad
Shad fishermen! Now’s the time. The shad have arrived and fly anglers and spin fishermen are taking lots of hickory shad at the Route 1 Bridge. Herring and white perch are in the river in force. Catfish are taking cut bait, fished on the bottom, in the outside bends of the main river channel. Bass are taking shad-colored crankbaits along the South bank of the river and plastic worms and … [Read more...]
Flounder on the Way!
Flounder reports are starting to roll in from Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Look for the big flatfish to start showing up in the bay very soon. A few red drum have also been caught on the Eastern Shore. Some puppy drum and speckled trout have been reported inside Rudee and Lynnhaven inlets, so things are looking up. Tautog catches are picking up at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and on other … [Read more...]
Historic Lewisburg
(This is the second in a series of growing up in Lewisburg, West Virginia, perhaps the greatest town and in the best time to grow up that a young man could ever ask for.) I had been uprooted at the tender age of 11 from my hometown of Beckley, WV to a place called Lewisburg, historic Lewisburg, they said. I couldn’t have cared less about the history part, all I knew is that my best … [Read more...]
Record Tuna Fish
The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries has certified a new state record bluefin tuna. Retired Army General Scott Chambers of Townsend, Delaware, reeled in the 877-pound fish on March 17 after fighting with the fish for 2 ½ hours off Oregon Inlet. The big bluefin measured 113 inches curved fork length (tracing the contour of the body from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail) and … [Read more...]
