My father, James E. Brewer, was killed in action during World War II, eight days before I was born at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC. His B 29 was shot down over Burma. My young mother then brought me home to live with her extended family – my Grandmother, Mama Ida; Aunt Pearl, my grandmother’s older sister; Joanne, my mom’s younger sister; and Uncle Sidney, Mama Ida’s younger brother. It … [Read more...]
A Pile of Leaves
There were two maple trees in our yard on Court Street when we moved to Lewisburg, WV in 1955. There was nothing unusual about those two trees in the spring and summer, other than the grass beneath them was always a good spot to catch a few night crawlers for fish bait. The trees were so thick with limbs that they weren’t much good for climbing. But when October arrived, the leaves on those … [Read more...]
A Captain’s Log
By Capt. Reese Stecher It was a bloodbath last Thursday. We started with the trout and the trout lost. I gave up on netting. They were coming over the side faster than I could keep up with. It was the best day size-wise all week as we ended up with a dozen keepers. We then moved onto the rockfish. Some days they bite like crazy. Some days you can't get a bite. And some days you … [Read more...]
Great Fishing on the South River
South River Fly Shop reports that the fishing is great on the South River. Water levels are above normal, but clear. There are lots of big rainbows and even bigger browns being caught on nymphs and streamers. Jwal's Rubber Legs Tung-stone, Reed's Micro-mop, Taleteller's Frenchie's, Arlie's Gnarlie Caddis, and Tyler's Mini-truders have been go-to patterns. Several back-to-back high water events … [Read more...]
Big Louisa County Buck
Sherman Shifflett forwarded this picture of a very nice Louisa County buck. Mark Lloyd with the Fox Run Hunt Club took with bow on October 27. FRHC is located in the eastern end of Louisa County, near Holly Grove. Part of the lease straddles the Louisa-Hanover border. Good shooting, Mark! … [Read more...]
Chicken Tenders with Picatta Sauce
One of the great buys in the poultry section of the super market is a pack of chicken tenderloins. It would seem to me that these would be quite expensive, like beef tenderloin, but they are very reasonable, less than three bucks a pound. Chicken tenderloins, also known as chicken tenders, chicken strips or chicken fillets, are meats prepared from the minor pectoral muscles of the … [Read more...]
Elk in Virginia
From VDGIF Elk were historically found throughout eastern North America, including Virginia. However, by the late 1800s, unsustainable hunting and habitat alteration resulted in the extinction of the eastern elk. The last survivor of Virginia’s original elk herd was killed in 1855 in Clarke County. In 1916, the newly created Virginia Game Commission authorized the importation and … [Read more...]
Light Bulbs: Part 2
By Nancy Brewer Continuing my blog from last month may help you to think through some important issues when choosing the correct light bulb. Light bulbs give off different colors of light, known as the color temperature. Often as bulbs burn out, replacing them with the same color temperature (Kelvin) can be challenging. Have you ever noticed that some bulbs in your recessed cans … [Read more...]

Eatin’ Out at Arby’s
My wife, Nancy, found herself out and about at lunchtime last week with nothing to eat. She rode past Arby’s and thought, “Why not?” That night she said she had a really good lunch at Arby’s and couldn’t remember the last time we ate there. I couldn’t either and I don’t know why. For fast food and quick, easy meals, we often go to a deli, a pizza place or the old faithful MacDonald’s. That … [Read more...]
