We always called it Crazy Jane’s, but it’s really Jane’s Crazy Mixed Up Salt. It has been a staple in our pantry for 50 years. My wife, Crazy Nancy, uses it to make garlic bread when we eat Italian. She slices almost all the way through a loaf of French or Italian bread, pours melted butter between the slices, then sprinkles the bread with garlic powder and a heavy shake of “Crazy Jane’s” Mixed Up … [Read more...]
The Legendary Campbell County Buck
By Jeff Phillips Most Virginia deer hunters consider November the magical month, but December 2018 has proven to be a remarkable Big Buck harvest month in our state, and Tom Harvey of Campbell County is a shining example, having his Big Buck wish list fulfilled on December 4th. Tom is an old school hunter spending most of his deer season with a bow in his hand, which includes both … [Read more...]
Puppies and Stripers
In Virginia, big stripers are moving in from the ocean as the season draws to a close on New Year’s Day. Fish to 60 pounds are going for live feels. Some nice sea bass are coming from the ocean wrecks, though that season also closes Dec. 31. Trout and puppy drum are biting in Lynnhaven and Rudee inlets. Offshore charters are scoring with tuna, wahoo and albacore when weather … [Read more...]
In The Christmas Spirit
It was December 24, 1956. I had waited until the afternoon of Christmas Eve to begin my shopping spree. I had $10 saved up from my paper route and Mama Ida kicked in an extra five dollars so I could buy a present for everyone on my list. As I walked downtown, it was spitting snow. The lamp posts were adorned with Christmas lights and greenery and there was a Lionel train and a miniature town … [Read more...]
Clifton Inn Restaurant
For my recent birthday, my wife Nancy gave me a gift certificate to the Clifton Inn Restaurant. It was more like a “down payment” to what I now consider the finest restaurant in Charlottesville. Clifton is a little pricey, but you only turn 39 once, right? Nancy had been there once before, but this was my first experience. We sat at the Chef’s Table, basically in the kitchen, observing every … [Read more...]
Cold Water Boating: Be Safe
By Bruce Ingram The most dangerous incident of my paddling career occurred on the James River when a friend and I overturned in his canoe. Earlier, my water temperature gauge had registered 54 degrees and the air temperature 65 degrees. When I fell in, I felt as if a sledge hammer had struck my chest, and my buddy and I struggled to swim to shore – losing most of our gear. That day, the air … [Read more...]
Pizza Stuffed Shells
Is there anybody who doesn’t like pizza? If so, I’ve never met this strange person. Pizza is just good stuff. Recently, I saw a recipe idea for Pizza Stuffed Shells and I knew that the children of a family I do a little cooking for would love this dish. They did. It turned out great. This is a dish that can be assembled ahead and stored in the fridge, or you can whip it together in … [Read more...]
Suet Time
My two suet feeders have been getting more and more attention since the weather got cold. They were quite popular last week with 9 inches of snow on the ground and nothing much to eat except for my feeders and the seeds I scattered. I saw nuthatches, downy woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers, sparrows, chickadees, titmice and wrens squeezing in and out of the suet cages. They say cardinals, … [Read more...]

Lucky Buck Runs Out of Luck
By Sherman Shifflett Twice the “Lucky Buck” had dodged the bullet. Saved by unique circumstances after coming within range. But the "Lucky Buck" finally ran out of luck. I tagged him Wednesday afternoon before dark. I got some backstrap in my freezer and am now waiting for a good day to cook some "deer nuggets." I decided to use a different tree stand. The "Lucky Buck" had dodged … [Read more...]
