By the time we had settled in at Lewisburg, WV around 1956, television had really hit its stride. Great shows were airing, the majority of homes now had sets and the power of a television ad was daunting. If we saw it on TV, we had to have it. I remember Saturday morning cartoons, many sponsored by M&Ms. “They melt in your mouth, not in your hands!” the ad said. And we begged for … [Read more...]
Liberty Mills Farm Corn Maze
It’s time to get lost. It’s time to head to Somerset and wander around within a cornfield maze for several hours, hoping someone will find you and you can get out. Actually, they have mazes of varying degrees of difficulty and no one has ever been permanently lost at Liberty Mills Farm, though buzzards have been seen circling the back of the field on several occasions. But the maze is … [Read more...]
Poached Rockfish
What, exactly, are rockfish, my friend Janice Kaltenbach wanted to know. She was confused about the terminology, reading somewhere that rockfish were native only to the Pacific. I explained that here in Virginia, as well as Maryland, some people refer to striped bass that are caught in saltwater as “rocks” or “rockfish”, while those same striped bass caught in freshwater are dubbed … [Read more...]
Abe Lincoln Tomatoes
My Daddy always said that it didn’t matter when you planted tomatoes in your garden, they all came in at the same time. Meaning….. for a few short weeks in the summer, you’ll have tomatoes coming out of the wazoo, and then it’s back to eating plastic tomatoes from the grocery store. But I believe I’ve solved the tomato glut problem, This spring, my Nancy started a patio garden at the top of … [Read more...]
Carmello’s Ristorante Italiano
Sometimes you just feel like Italian – food that is. Since Olivate closed in Albemarle Square, we have not settled in on one regular Italian Restaurant, though we often visit Travinia’s and find it quite good – depending on the waiter that evening. But when I think of an Italian ristorante, I think of soft music, a glass of smooth red wine, candlelight and elegant dining. This past … [Read more...]
Shedding Light On Light Bulbs
By Nancy Brewer I have blogged often about light bulbs, but it is worth repeating. Most often, fixtures are purchased with beauty, style and desire in mind. We don’t necessarily consider important issues such as the specific lighting needs of the room and how to save money on energy bills. Saving energy starts with selecting the correct bulbs. Compact fluorescent (CFLs) and … [Read more...]
Good Golf Cart Management
Lots of pros teach good “golf course management” when playing a round of golf, but Kevin Mann and I practiced good golf cart management during our last round at Lake Monticello. It had rained who knows how much a few days before we played. That and the fact that it has rained more this summer than anytime since Noah went for his boat ride and the course was like a sponge. Number 12 was roped off … [Read more...]
A Nags Head Honey Hole
Last fall Capt. Reese Stecher and I had about two hours to fish at Nags Head. Reese said he had found a hot spot, a honey hole that he didn’t know existed and he’s been doing charters for 20 years. Reese cranked up his motor and we sped back up into the sound after launching at Oregon Inlet. Reese described the spot as a slight drop-off in the sound bottom over a huge grass bed. “Get ready,” he … [Read more...]
Fall On The Outer Banks
(This issue of CvilleBuzz will be devoted to a fall getaway on the Outer Banks – everything from how to get there to what to do and where to eat.) It’s finally fall. The heat and humidity of August has lifted, the skies are blue and there is a slight morning nip in the air. Let’s celebrate fall’s arrival. Let’s take a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Outer Banks is a … [Read more...]
How To Get There
The best way to get to the Outer Banks is to hop in a twin engine Cessna at the Charlottesville Albemarle Regional Airport and touch down in Manteo about 45 minutes later. The next best way is to avoid I-64 from Richmond to Hampton Roads and take Rt. 460 from Petersburg to Sussex, then over to Great Bridge. It takes maybe a little longer – depending on traffic - but you don’t have to contend with … [Read more...]
