Boomers were all about clothing and style. Bottle green was a hot color one fall and burgundy, the next. Bass Weejuns were the shoes of choice. Anything else was a cheap imitation. Then, in 1962, a fabric called madras was hotter than hot. That Christmas, the only thing I asked for was a madras shirt. Madras was fairly pricey. I believe a long sleeve madras shirt was about $10, the equivalent … [Read more...]
Creasy Greens, Coming Soon
I planted some creasy green seeds last spring and they mostly sat in the finely tilled soil and sulked. Nancy had received a big pack of seeds from her cousin, Billy, and I spread the extras at the top end of my garden where not much grows anyway. Not enough sun. I also remember scattering them just about the time we had a little dry spell, so they didn’t do anything. But I didn’t … [Read more...]
The Water Tree
I have a water tree in my backyard. A what? Yes, a water tree. Near the top of one of my 60-year old silver maples is a large, broken-off limb, one that has a scooped-out bowl built in. It collects water like a wooden salad bowl and the birds love it. I first noticed the unique limb last summer. I was watching a blue jay and noticed he flew to that spot and was dipping his bill like he … [Read more...]
2019 TRENDS IN LIGHTING FIXTURE & SHADE COLOR
By Nancy Brewer “Blue and green remain popular in their own right, but when combined together in Celadon, the two create a soft, calming shade.” I wish I could say I wrote that sentence, however, this was written in the Furniture Lighting Decor magazine. The shade of Celadon is quite lovely and reminds me of colors of the Pacific Ocean surrounding Hawaii. It is such a relaxed color, and some … [Read more...]
Bojangles’
Years ago, there was a Bojangles’ restaurant in Charlottesville beside Hardy’s at the corner of Rio and 29 North. My eldest daughter, Angelin, practically camped out in their Drive-Thru lane. She was addicted to their biscuits. For some reason, that store didn’t survive and closed a few years later. About a year ago, Bojangles’ opened another restaurant across from Forest Lakes, and it seems to be … [Read more...]
Venison, Anyone?
By Sherman Shifflett On January 5, 2019, a group of us went deer hunting in Buckingham County, VA. It was the last day of the season. The owners allow us to bring in dogs once a year. We used two bird dogs to hunt the 200-acre farm. The farm is right on the James River. Eleven deer were harvested. Two young boys tagged their first deer. Two monster bucks got away. Some of the bucks … [Read more...]
Poky Little Rice Pudding
Remember the children’s book, The Poky Little Puppy? It was a staple read in our house as my sister and younger brothers were growing up. The story goes like this. Five little puppies sneak beneath the fence to go out and play. At dinner time, four of the pups scamper back to the house only to find an angry mother who sends the puppies to bed with no dessert. Later, after all the family is in … [Read more...]
South River Report
The South River Fly Shop says that the South River is finally coming into shape after all the rain. Water levels are still above normal, but water clarity is great, and some nice fish are being caught on larger streamers and heavy nymph rigs. Rubber Legs John-Stone size 10, Conehead 20 Incher, Mop Flies, Jig Leeches, Frenchies, Pheasant Tails, and Electric Caddis Larva are all great choices for … [Read more...]
How Things Smelled
I believe that as we age, we become accustomed to smells and odors. Sure, many things still smell good – like flowers and colognes. Or they can smell bad, like a trash can in August the day before pickup. But looking back – way, way back – this Boomer can recall the vivid scents of youth. It was as if I smelled things for the first time. Here are some of the distinct fragrances I recall. Well I … [Read more...]
From Scratch Chicken Pie
Chicken pie is the ultimate in comfort food. Pastry, chicken, yummy veggies and a rich broth? Mmmm, mmmm, good. Nancy and I even enjoy Marie Callender’s Frozen Pot Pies. But last week, our favorite chef from Orange County, Terry Tigner, served a “from scratch” chicken pie that was truly memorable. It’s a little bit of work to it, but it’s well worth the effort. The recipe comes from … [Read more...]
