The saltwater report is about the same this week. It’s still very good and there’s a wide variety of fish from which to choose. The latest target is amberjack at the south tower and the Chesapeake light tower. Good Spanish mackerel fishing continues along the oceanfront and in the lower bay. Most fish are being caught on Clark or Drone spoons tied directly to a 20-30-foot mono leader behind a … [Read more...]
Summer Hatches on the South River
South River Fly Shop in Waynesboro says the South River has been very good, even for July, with a great Trico spinner fall on most mornings. Midges and small black caddis hatches have been pretty consistent. Tommy Lawhorne says the fishing has been slowing down by noon with all the heat. He adds that the brookie streams in the Shenandoah National Park are getting too low for safe catch and … [Read more...]
Destination Nags Head
It was Nancy’s birthday weekend. “Take me to the beach,” she said. “Let’s go to Nag’s Head,” She didn’t have to ask me twice. I secured reservations for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and we broke camp from Charlottesville at 9AM Friday morning. Destination Nags Head. The Outer Banks of North Carolina ranks right at the top of our choices for a getaway. Occasionally, we … [Read more...]
Getting There
Getting to and from Nags head is half the fun, unless you try to sneak through Hampton Roads at 5 PM and get hung up in D.C.-like traffic. Actually, we took I-64 on the way down so we could stop at Bubba’s at Virginia Beach, Nancy’s favorite restaurant. We met with some traffic, but since it was mid-day, it wasn’t so bad. And interestingly, when we left Virginia Beach, my GPS Lady took … [Read more...]
Where To Stay
Nags Head is a family-type place with many terrific oceanside and soundside cottages for rent. The prices, naturally, go up in July, the heart of the tourist season, but they are most affordable in spring and fall and rates in late June weren’t that bad. We often rent a cottage on the sound, but you generally have to stay a week in order to make advance reservations, so that was out for us this … [Read more...]
What To Do?
Sometimes when you’re at the beach, “nothing” is the best thing to do. Just sit on a lawn chair in the sand, watch the waves curl and crash along the shore, marvel at the string of pelicans bobbing over the water and simply relax. However, there is no shortage of things to do at Nags Head, and for me, a fishing rod is usually involved. You can fish in the surf, off the piers, in the sound, from … [Read more...]
Miller’s: Nags Head’s Finest
There are scads of great restaurants in Nags Head. If they weren’t great, they wouldn’t survive because of all the competition. As of last weekend, though, Miller’s Waterfront Restaurant is our choice as the best of the best. When they say waterfront, it’s waterfront. Any closer and your feet would get wet. Nancy wanted to see the sunset over the Roanoke Sound on her birthday evening. … [Read more...]
Purple Beauties
One of the highlights of our three-day jaunt to Nags Head occurred every day from the balcony of our room. There was a purple martin colony not 20 feet away. There were 18 nests and the beautiful birds were all in process of feeding and tending to their young. I have seen purple martins from a distance, but never really knew much about them, other than they were quite social and formed … [Read more...]
Reverse Sear Steak
Last week I offered my opinion on how to cook a Perfect Steak – basically put it on an extra hot grill to sear, then turn down the heat and bring it to the correct temperature. Floyd Hollier, a Lighting Salesman Extraordinaire from Richmond, cooks his just the opposite. Here are Floyd’s instructions for his Perfect Steak. Says Floyd: If your grill is not available, here is a different way … [Read more...]
Acorn Squash
I had forgotten just how good a fresh acorn squash can taste. When we lived in West Virginia, Daddy always had a big garden. And I was chief weed puller for all his spreads. Just about the time a big whiffle ball game was set to start, I was summoned to the garden. The green beans or tomatoes needed picking, weeded or dusted. I swore back then I would never have a garden, but there was always … [Read more...]
