We are rapidly losing our meadows and shrublands. We certainly don’t want to lose meadows, with all those nice wild flowers and natural flora, but who really cares if we lose shrublands? Millions of plants and animals, that’s who. The Virginia Game Department is doing what it can to educate about shrublands and their endangered status. Here are some interesting observations as supplied by … [Read more...]
Brick Oven Pizza
Sunday night is often pizza night for the Brewers. Odds are that we have either had company, been to someone’s house, eaten out or all of the above in a given weekend and neither Nancy nor yours truly are particularly interested in cooking. Last Sunday evening, I happened to think about the Brick Oven. It had been a while since I’ve eaten there and I have had some terrific pizzas over the years … [Read more...]
The First Tomato
With bated breath I await that first tomato from my garden. Currently, all our tomato vines are prospering. Nancy’s little cage and above-ground potted plants on the patio looks like a tomato jungle with lush vines and lots of small to medium size green tomatoes. My tomatoes in the ground garden also look healthy. This year I planted one cherry tomato plant for salads, and I had one volunteer … [Read more...]
A Delightful Weed
I saw what appeared to be a weed along the side of the road. But the flowers were beautiful, a vivid orange. I marveled at the plant as I drove past almost daily, then decided I had to stop for a closer look. It was growing wild at the edge of a parking lot. I took a picture, then wondered if I could identify this beauty. I think it is a Butterfly Weed. Not a Butterfly Bush, we … [Read more...]
Saltwater Action Continues Strong
The saltwater report is about the same this week. It’s still very good and there’s a wide variety of fish from which to choose. The latest target is amberjack at the south tower and the Chesapeake light tower. Good Spanish mackerel fishing continues along the oceanfront and in the lower bay. Most fish are being caught on Clark or Drone spoons tied directly to a 20-30-foot mono leader behind a … [Read more...]
Summer Hatches on the South River
South River Fly Shop in Waynesboro says the South River has been very good, even for July, with a great Trico spinner fall on most mornings. Midges and small black caddis hatches have been pretty consistent. Tommy Lawhorne says the fishing has been slowing down by noon with all the heat. He adds that the brookie streams in the Shenandoah National Park are getting too low for safe catch and … [Read more...]
Destination Nags Head
It was Nancy’s birthday weekend. “Take me to the beach,” she said. “Let’s go to Nag’s Head,” She didn’t have to ask me twice. I secured reservations for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and we broke camp from Charlottesville at 9AM Friday morning. Destination Nags Head. The Outer Banks of North Carolina ranks right at the top of our choices for a getaway. Occasionally, we … [Read more...]
Getting There
Getting to and from Nags head is half the fun, unless you try to sneak through Hampton Roads at 5 PM and get hung up in D.C.-like traffic. Actually, we took I-64 on the way down so we could stop at Bubba’s at Virginia Beach, Nancy’s favorite restaurant. We met with some traffic, but since it was mid-day, it wasn’t so bad. And interestingly, when we left Virginia Beach, my GPS Lady took … [Read more...]
Where To Stay
Nags Head is a family-type place with many terrific oceanside and soundside cottages for rent. The prices, naturally, go up in July, the heart of the tourist season, but they are most affordable in spring and fall and rates in late June weren’t that bad. We often rent a cottage on the sound, but you generally have to stay a week in order to make advance reservations, so that was out for us this … [Read more...]
What To Do?
Sometimes when you’re at the beach, “nothing” is the best thing to do. Just sit on a lawn chair in the sand, watch the waves curl and crash along the shore, marvel at the string of pelicans bobbing over the water and simply relax. However, there is no shortage of things to do at Nags Head, and for me, a fishing rod is usually involved. You can fish in the surf, off the piers, in the sound, from … [Read more...]
