Like a number of larger retail stores, Stein Mart was unable to weather the crippling economic effects of the Chinese virus. It announced bankruptcy just this week. They will close all their stores. I was devastated. Stein Mart had become my personal favorite place to shop. I don’t buy a lot of clothes, but when I do, I like classic styles and colors and I like fair prices. Stein Mart … [Read more...]
Chopsticks Express
About once a month we do take out for Chinese. Our go-to place used to be Flaming Wok – great food, good prices and super quick turn-around, but The Wok is no more. Some brilliant real estate agent decided he could sell that entire strip of property on 29 north as a site for a hotel, so they didn’t renew the lease for the established Chinese restaurant, That was about five years ago, and the … [Read more...]
Red Drum Run Continues
It may never stop. Catches of big red drum got off to a hot start in the Chesapeake Bay back in April and they show no sign of letting up. Large schools of huge drum continue to pop up and anglers with a rod ready are casting and hooking up with some big boys to 70 pounds. Both the larger red drum and the cobia are plentiful throughout the lower bay and along the coast. Anglers are catching them … [Read more...]
Back To School
I was in Wal-Mart this week to buy some birdseed and passed through a huge section of back to school stuff – backpacks, pencils, notebooks, calculators, lunch boxes and other paraphernalia. The section was like a ghost town. Nobody was shopping because basically there is no back to school. What a shame. I feel sorry for the merchants and I especially feel sorry for the children. They … [Read more...]
A Round at Tanyard
I hadn’t swung a golf club in almost two months, but I teed it up with my Golf Amigos at Tanyard in Louisa last week and wondered what kind of golfer would show up after all that rust. I hit five ordinary shots on the first hole and was pleased to record a bogey. Bogey golf is about my speed. Then, on hole number 2, a short par 4, I laid up nicely with a six iron, knocked the ball on the green … [Read more...]
Lots of Vines, No Beans
I planted four short rows of Blue Wonder Pole beans back in May, and after keeping the rabbits away, the vines took off, reaching for the heavens. They bloomed about a month later, but no beans, then they bloomed again, but no beans. What gives? Sherman Shifflett in Louisa has the same problem and an agricultural agent said others are experiencing the same results. Perhaps … [Read more...]
If You Build It
Fish will come. Beautiful water lilies and hyacinths will come. Frogs will come and you can look forward to many pleasant hours sitting beside your goldfish pond. That is, if you build it. We did, obviously, and I’d like to share our experiences just in case you’d like to put in a pond in your yard. The hole is the hardest part. If you or a neighbor have a small backhoe, then you’re … [Read more...]
Late Nesters
This has been a strange year for bluebirds. My bluebirds started very early. They were on their first nest in late March. They pulled off a successful hatch, though, they had three young ones and all survived. All three have stayed in my yard since then. But almost immediately, the hen was back on the nest, then left. Later, she was back on again, and I saw one bird that fledged, then I … [Read more...]
Waldorf Salad: A Summer Treat
Everybody loves a Waldorf Salad, but it’s usually a dish reserved for company. Since “having company over” was seemingly abolished by the Chinese Virus, I decided to make a Waldorf Salad for just Nancy and me. It was company-worthy, a real summertime treat. The salad is duly named for the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. In 1896, the hotel hosted a charity ball to benefit St. Mary’s … [Read more...]
Yummm! A Bone-in Ribeye
Kroger’s had some ribeye steaks on sale last week. I glanced at one of the three-packs and noticed a lot of marbling in the steaks. Always, always buy steaks that are well-marbled. That was my Daddy’s advice and he was right as usual. I didn’t pay much attention to the price per pound, but I think the package was about $24, so $8 a steak wasn’t bad. I decided to freeze one steak and have … [Read more...]
