Fish will come. Beautiful water lilies and hyacinths will come. Frogs will come and you can look forward to many pleasant hours sitting beside your goldfish pond. That is, if you build it. We did, obviously, and I’d like to share our experiences just in case you’d like to put in a pond in your yard. The hole is the hardest part. If you or a neighbor have a small backhoe, then you’re … [Read more...]
Late Nesters
This has been a strange year for bluebirds. My bluebirds started very early. They were on their first nest in late March. They pulled off a successful hatch, though, they had three young ones and all survived. All three have stayed in my yard since then. But almost immediately, the hen was back on the nest, then left. Later, she was back on again, and I saw one bird that fledged, then I … [Read more...]
Waldorf Salad: A Summer Treat
Everybody loves a Waldorf Salad, but it’s usually a dish reserved for company. Since “having company over” was seemingly abolished by the Chinese Virus, I decided to make a Waldorf Salad for just Nancy and me. It was company-worthy, a real summertime treat. The salad is duly named for the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. In 1896, the hotel hosted a charity ball to benefit St. Mary’s … [Read more...]
Yummm! A Bone-in Ribeye
Kroger’s had some ribeye steaks on sale last week. I glanced at one of the three-packs and noticed a lot of marbling in the steaks. Always, always buy steaks that are well-marbled. That was my Daddy’s advice and he was right as usual. I didn’t pay much attention to the price per pound, but I think the package was about $24, so $8 a steak wasn’t bad. I decided to freeze one steak and have … [Read more...]
Head Boat Report
Fishing on the Rudee Inlet head boat fleet has been excellent this week. The sea bass bite remains good. Limit catches are not uncommon. Deep droppers are catching tilefish at the canyon. Rudee Tours has 17 hour offshore trips scheduled for Aug 13, 20, 27, and Sep 3. They also run daily inshore ½ day, ¾ day, full day and night trips. Give them a call, 757-425-3400. The offshore action has been … [Read more...]
Penny Candy
I saw a penny in the parking lot last week and stopped and picked it up. Most people won’t. A penny is looked upon as a nuisance coin. People drop excess pennies in a dish beside the cash register these days rather than fool with them. Afterall, there is not much you can do with a single penny. Boomers, though, can remember back when a mere penny bought tons of pure joy. Those were the days of … [Read more...]
A Perfect Breakfast
It dawned on me last Sunday that I may have been eating the Perfect Breakfast. So what exactly is this Perfect Breakfast, you ask? Two slices of thick, crispy bacon; two buttermilk biscuits oozing with real butter; a bowl of hot grits, also oozing with fresh butter; a slice of Golden Honeydew Melon; a glass of tomato juice; and two fried eggs, sunny-side up. That is obviously a very good … [Read more...]
Lexington-Style Slaw
Lexington barbeque. Maybe the best there is. Made in the Carolina barbeque capital, Lexington, NC, barbecue from the world famous Lexington Barbeque Restaurant is simply unequalled. Ditto, their coleslaw. Lexington- Style slaw differs from all its other rivals in that it’s red, not white. Some call it red slaw. I call it damned good and I made some recently. If you like barbeque, this is … [Read more...]
In White Peach Heaven
For 11 months a year, we are forced to buy fresh peaches that are anything but. They are likely imports from Mexico or South America that were picked months in advance and stored in cold lockers. These alien peaches are as hard as rocks and tasteless. But now, fellow peach aficionados, our time has come. The white peaches are in season and many local and regional orchards are bringing … [Read more...]
Pond Update
What would an issue of CvilleBuzz be without an update on the pond in our backyard? That would be like the NY Times omitting its Op Ed page. But to tell you the truth, I don’t know what we would have done for entertainment for the past few months were it not for our fascinating goldfish pond beside our patio. Afterall, you can’t go to the movies or plays or concerts. Fortunately, our little Golden … [Read more...]
