Lake Orange will hold its annual Youth Fishing Day this Saturday, September 27 from 10 to 2 pm. It’s a free event for those between 2 and 16 and there will be lots of fun and prizes in store. This will be the last week that Angler’s Landing will be open for the year, but the fishing is wide open. Says Darryl Kennedy, “The water temperature is in the low 70s bass and crappie heading to the shallows for the fall feed. Bass can be caught on topwater baits during lowlight periods and soft plastics during midday. Crappie can be caught with live minnows throughout the lake. Catfishing remains excellent for those anglers using live minnows or chicken livers. A few walleye have been caught on harness rigs tipped with nightcrawlers.”
Freshwater fishing around the state is similar to that at Lake Orange. Fish are sensing that the water is cooling, the light diminishing and it’s time to feed and fatten up for the winter.
Crappie and bass are coming shallow as are bluegills and shellcrackers. Catfish are coming shallow a little earlier in the day. Everything is biting and sportsmen will now have to decide on a bow and arrow or a fishing rod.
