The tuna season lasted just a few days as the commercial quota was quickly reached. A few of the big boys were wrestled in and they are still out there – just off the Virginia coast to be caught on a catch and release basis. At Nags Head, boats are hooking up with lots of blackfin tuna when they sail. A few big drum were beached at Ocracoke.
In Virginia, the best action is over the wrecks and reefs in 60 to 80 feet of water where big sea bass will readily snatch a bait. Tautogs will bite in the same areas.
Bigger and bigger striped bass are entering the bay and are feeding heavily off Cape Charles and around the CBBT. Live eels are the best baits.
Speckled trout are biting in the creeks, but the bite has slowed. Some pups are still around, as well. Schools of blues are busting baits alla cross the lower bay.
Freshwater
The best action on freshwater is coming from the tidal rivers – the Chick, Potomac, James and Rapp. Some nice bass are being caught along with crappie. The striper bite at Anna, Buggs, and Smith Mountain is improving daily.
