A strong bite of triggerfish is now happening at the CBBT. Triggerfish are largely a tropical species but have been showing up increasingly in Virginia waters on offshore reefs and at the mouth of the bay. Triggers have very small mouths, so small hooks are required. The fish hang in large schools and relate to cover. The average fish runs around 17-inches and weighs 5 pounds. They are strong fighters and delicious on the dinner table.
Offshore wrecks are producing excellent catches of triggers, sea bass and some big flounder. Inside the Bay, cobia and sheepshead fishing around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel has been very good. The puppy drum bite is improving while speckled trout numbers are fewer this year. Large schools of bull drum continue to prowl the waters around the islands of the CBBT. Good numbers of flounder are coming from the beaches, inlets, and around structure The ocean piers are giving up lots of Spanish mackerel while the bay piers are producing croakers, cobia, sea mullet and a few drum. Ocean charters have been good for tuna, Mahi, and sometimes Wahoo.
OBX
