They are not very glamorous fish, in fact most anglers consider a Spiny Dogfish to be a “trash’ fish. But if you’re heading to the coast of Virginia or the Outer Banks between now and March 1, they are likely to be one of the few fish you can catch from a pier or the surf.
They have many names – dogfish, dog sharks, or spiny dogfish and they love cold water. They are carnivorous and will eat most any fish or critter they can get in their mouths. They readily bite shrimp or squid on a hook.
Dogfish don’t get very large. Males can grow to about 36-inches while females can measure up to 48-inches. Most you catch in the surf will be between 18- and 24-inches.
But they are not at all “trash fish”. They are very good to eat, highly edible, and regarded by some as among the tastiest fish found in the ocean. In fact, they are the predominant fish used by the British in their Fish’N Chips recipes. Boats from England are frequently found off our shores netting dogfish. Some describe them as having a flaky, firm texture, with a mild sweet flavor. If you catch one, skin it like a catfish and remove the entrails. They have no bones, only cartilage to remove. Fry them crispy and serve with French Fries for your personal Fish’N Chips dinner.
Fishing Report
Last week was a bust in saltwater as bitter cold kept most anglers at home, watching football. Tuna are out there and when conditions are right, they will be coming back to the docks.
Freshwater
Only the heartiest went fishing last week. Boat ramps were iced over. and roads closed. The trout streams dropped down to the mid 30’s. Brrrr!
