Watch the dogwood trees in your yard. If they are blooming, the shad have arrived. The lovely trees are just beginning to bud in our yard, and the shad are making their way to Richmond and Fredericksburg. In freshwater, things are starting to happen. Bass are in pre-pawn and hungry, as are the crappie where some whoppers have been landed at Biggs Island, many over 3 pounds. Bluegills are beginning to stir in shallow water, and the trout season is in full gear.
In saltwater, not so much. A few flounder are making an appearance off the Eastern Shore but no reports of croakers or spot. Trout and pups are becoming more active in the lower Bay. On the Outer Banks, big red drum to 47-inches have been landed at Ocracoke. At Nags Head, it’s still slow in the surf but picking up in the sounds. A few more upward ticks in the water temperature and the fishing will be on fire.
