The big news on the OBX (other than catching bluefin tuna from a kayak) is bluefish. Nice blues and lots of them. Capt. Reese Stecher of Beach Bum Fishing says his parties have been hammering the bluefish – some up to 5-6 pounds and more. The fish have been schooling under the birds and are hitting top water plugs. Catching these warriors on light tackle is a thrill and Capt. Stecher’s clients’ rods have been bending double. Reese says the puppy drum fishing is also strong and the cobia are on the way. Bluefish are also biting in the surf and from the piers along with sea mullet, blow toads, shad, and puppy drum.
Winds are keeping blue water boats in port, but when they sail, they are loading up on yellowfin tuna.

Speckled trout and flounder are becoming more and more active. Puppy drum are in the shallow waters of the lower bay rivers, inlets, and creeks. Huge red drum are stacking up on the shoals near Fisherman’s Island and more are on the way from North Carolina.
Sheepshead and tautog are eating crab baits especially around the CBBT. Black Drum are being caught from Sandbridge to Cape Charles and Chincoteague. Pier fishermen on the lower bay are decking croakers, drum, and sea mullet. Baits of choice are bloodworms, squid strips, shrimp pieces, or Fishbites in the crab/bloodworm flavors.
