Maybe all the strict regulations and conservation measures are taking effect. Lots and lots of stripers are being caught around Virgina Beach, in the tidal tributaries and lower Chesapeake Bay. Glide baits and live eels are working as the sleek warriors attack from docks, structures and any area holding bait.
Nearshore boats out of Virginia Beach are running into Mahi as the warmer blue waters have drawn the fish in much closer to shore.
Some over-slot drum showing up, with more fish moving through the area. The bull reds should only become more active as we move farther into September.
Oceanfront & Sandbridge: The surf bite is still hot, with plenty of bait holding along the beach.
The Bridge-Tunnel has been producing some solid flounder fishing, along with cobia. There have also been reports of big bluefish and good-size Spanish mackerel in the area.
The offshore bite has been good and is only getting better. The mahi bite is on fire. Sea bass are still biting well and continue to provide plenty of action offshore.
Big flounder are also coming in from the offshore wrecks.
OBX
There were some choppy seas at the OBX early this week, but the water is finally settling down. The drum fishing has been very good, though not many keepers, as they are well over slot – but still good fishing. The bluefish and Spanish continue to bite well. Surf fishermen are pulling in pompano, croaker, and mullet. The piers had bluefish and Spanish on Thursday.
The offshore action yesterday was very good for sailfish and marlin, along with some yellowfin and mahi.
Freshwater
The waters are beginning to cool as the days grow shorter and the fish are taking notice – moving closer to shore and feeding more heavily. Bluegills and crappie are edging their way back to the shallows as are the bass. Striper fishing at Lake Anna has been excellent.
