One of the best eating fish in freshwater is a nice, fat catfish. The lady in the picture who fished in Lake Orange last week will soon be enjoying a catfish dinner. Lake Orange is one of Viginia’s most productive impoundments – with scores of nice crappie, bluegills, shellcrackers, walleye, snakeheads, yellow perch, lunker bass, pickerel and – yes – catfish.
The best catfish tactic is to use a single or double drop rig above a sinker. Lower the sinker just to the bottom so the bait stays above and out of the muck on the bottom. When the cats smell the bait, it’s “fish on.” The minimum size limit for catfish at Lake Orange is 15-inches and anglers may creel 8 per day.
Welcomed Rain
This week’s rain will help cool freshwater and trigger a movement of fish from very deep to more shallow water. It will also push the breeding shad in Lake Anna up lake and stripers will follow. The rivers, especially the James, will also become more productive.
