There has been a surge of nice flounder catches in the lower Bay, especially at the CBBT. Lots of fish in the 5–6-pound class are being caught on live spot, jigs and GULP baits. The flatties are also biting on Virginia piers along with croakers, spot and a few rockfish. Surfcasters at Sandbridge are beaching spot, croaker, and Spanish mackerel. The lower bay and Va. Beach oceanfront has been good for Spanish mackerel. The bull drum bite has slowed considerably but a few fish are still around. Cobia fishing is excellent. Super-sized sheepshead continue to come from bridge pilings and structure. Lots of nice sized bluefish are making a showing throughout the lower bay and aand along the oceanfront. Ocean wrecks are giving up triggerfish and sea bass. Offshore trips are producing tuna, sharks, and Mahi.
Freshwater
Boat traffic and extreme heat have put a hamper on freshwater fishing, the exception being the Tidal Rivers which remain productive. The James is giving up some nice smallmouth – if you can get to them. Portaging is difficult.
