We started off the year with two frogs which sprung to life when the water began to warm in our goldfish pond. One was small, the other much bigger. The little one split right away but his larger pond mate hung around and bellowed at night for a bit longer, then he also skipped town
All spring and summer we were “frog-less” because I had not stocked any tadpoles in the spring for replacements.
Then – and you never know about frogs – the large frog was back in the pond after a two-month hiatus. I always figured frogs were locked into a body of water, but apparently that’s not the case. They are prone to wandering and spend a good bit of their time chasing down insects in the nearby weeds and bushes. I don’t know how long our Prodigal Frog will stick around, but my suspicions are that he knows a little pond is a good place to hibernate when winter comes.
That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it – and I hope our fone resident frog sticks around too.
