When we went to WVA for a family gathering back in May, my daughter Laura managed to catch a couple small tadpoles while she was fishing Second Creek. She put them in a cup of water and brought them back to Charlottesville, knowing we like to keep our goldfish pond stocked with frogs and all the big fellas had departed. This week, I saw a tiny frog hiding among the lily pads and figured one of Laura’s ‘poles had come through the frog change of life. Then, the next day I saw another small frog in the lily pond, but a little bigger than the first one, and then another and even another in the goldfish pond. Now, we have small frogs everywhere. I know where the two tadpoles came from, but it baffles me how frogs just show up in our back yard, deposit their eggs and vamoose. I don’t know what kind of frogs we have, but I’m glad to have them.
As I always say, a goldfish pond without frogs is – well, just a goldfish pond without frogs – and who wants that?
