If you like beautiful, rolling hills at the foot of the Blue Ridge, you’ll love The Greene Hills Club in Stanardsville. One of central Virginia’s best kept secrets, Greene Hills is unmatched in the beauty of the surroundings and the friendliness of its members.
Last week, my three golf amigos and I had a chance to tee it up at Greene Hills and use our VSGA cards. I think we paid about $30 each. That’s a genuine bargain for one of Central Virginia’s premiere courses.
Greene Hills is a semi-private club with about 350 golfing members. The course was designed by Charlottesville’s Buddy Loving and opened to play in 1968. The magnificent par-71 layout measures 6,400 yards from the blue tees, but it is anything but a pushover. The hills that make the course so lovely add intrigue to a round of golf with various lies on the fairways. Golfers used to playing off a flat lie on every shot usually leave the Greene Hills with less than stellar rounds. But it’s not an over-powering course. An average hitter can tee it up and expect to be on or near the greens in regulation, especially from the white tees, which total 5,971 yards. The gold, or senior tees, measure 5,360.
Greene Hills has some of the finest bent grass greens in the area, beautifully maintained by Course Superintendents Jared French and Rodney Taylor. The lush fairways are Bermuda grass. Water comes into play throughout the course, which borders the historic Conway River, a native trout stream.
Mike Moyers has served as Head Golf Professional at The Greene Hills Club since 1981. It’s highly unusual for a Head Pro to remain at a course for over 30 years, but Moyers enjoys coming to work every day.
“Not only is this a beautiful course, but Greene Hills has a good membership, a great group of people,” Mike said. “They make it easy for me to stay here.”
Making people feel at home is a primary attraction for members joining at The Greene Hills Club
“This is a friendly group,” said a Greene hills member, John Scott. “They made me feel at home right away. My family has really enjoyed our membership here. It’s a beautiful course and fun to play.
John also likes the fact that play moves quickly at Greene Hills, even on weekends.
“We average 4 hours for a round on the weekends,” John stated. “Often, it’s less than that. During the week, walkers can play a round in three hours.”
The Greene Hills Club offers all the amenities of a country club with a restaurant, The Hills Grill, and a banquet room for dances and social gatherings. The club also features a fully stocked pro shop; plus a driving range, practice green, short game practice area, 25-meter pool with slide and diving board, and two tennis courts.
Greene Hills is home to one the largest and most active Ladies Golf Associations in Central Virginia, a senior traveling team, as well as the Gators swim team. The club puts on numerous members’ tournaments and serves as the venue for outside guest golf play, tournaments, and outings.
The club has some special deals now on membership packages – quite attractive. To find out more about the limited number of these memberships now available contact Bill Hess at 985-7328. For more information, visit www.greenehillsclub.com.
