Early this spring, Nancy was headed to the Corner Store were heavy and round, perfect for a sandwich and were the best tasting tomatoes I have ever eaten – even better than Heirloom Tomatoes which I love.
Big Boys are called “indeterminates”, which means they continue to grow and have fruit until the first frost. They can grow to heights exceeding 7 feet and they say it’s best to prune them and plant them with trellises. All tomato plants are vines, but the Big Boy variety gives new meaning to vines. Jack and The Beanstalk would be impressed with my vines.
The sweet, fragrant Big Boy tomatoes can weigh a pound or more. Experts often list them among their top five favorites. The plant is a strong grower and is blessed with good disease resistance. The Big Boy was Burpee’s second hybrid tomato and helped usher in the modern era of tomato breeding.
Maybe next year I’ll try pruning, but probably not. But, if at all possible, I’ll absolutely have some Big Boy Tomato vines in my little garden.
