We have customers who strive to make the right decisions regarding the lighting in their homes, and they come to us for advice. Thought we would offer some tips we share with our customers in hopes you will be helped as well.
- Bath: hang the mirror so the bottom sits 44”- 46” from the floor
- Sconce: hang 66” from the floor
- Ceiling fixtures: hang no closer than 7’ from the floor
- Dining room: Over the years I have found the size of the chandelier has nothing to do with the size of the table but of the room. Add the measurements of the room together. For example, if the room is 12 x 12, adding them would be 24. The fixture should be on the average, 24” in diameter.
- Dining room and the Island: Fixtures for these areas should hang 33” to 36” off the table or counter.
- Swagging: NO! NEVER! Unfortunately, when a home is built, the builder and the electrician will wire the center of the dining room for the chandelier. Often, they do not take into consideration that there may be other pieces of furniture in the room making it impossible for the table to be placed in the center. When this happens, some think they can swag the fixture but that will not look good. It screams mistake. Please, call an electrician to move the junction box so it will be directly over the table and dry wall the mistaken place.
- Dimmers: are wonderful in every room. When using LED bulbs, an older magnetic dimmer will not work well. You need an ELV (electronic low voltage) dimmer.
- Bulbs: use the same color temperature (kelvin or K) when purchasing bulbs for a room, do not mix the kelvin temperatures. Read the labels carefully before making your purchase.
