I saw this the other day and found it very interesting. Trevi Fountain, one of Rome’s greatest attractions, is also a money magnet. Every day of the year, some 3,000 Euros are tossed in its clear waters, which works out to some $1,280,000 yearly. The reason, of course, that people toss away good money is the myth surrounding Trevi. Made famous by the 1954 movie and hit song, Three Coins in the Fountain, if you throw one coin in the fountain you will return to Rome. If you throw in two coins, you will fall in love with an attractive Italian. If you throw three coins in the fountain you will marry the person that you met.
Tourists stand with their backs to the Trevi Fountain (built between 1732 and 1762) facing the monument and toss a coin over their left shoulder with their right hand into the water. Designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini, Trevi stands 86 ft, high and 161 ft. wide. It is easily the most famous fountain in the world and the most profitable, as well.
