I have been in Louisiana the last few months, and here is a quick report on the fishing.
Just like the North Carolina fishery, it has been an up and down season with some tough days due to weather. But overall, we have been getting shots at and catching giant redfish almost everyday. This is all shallow water sight-fishing in 1-3 feet of clear water for 15- to 35-pound redfish. Watching a fish that size chase down and eat your fly or lure is a sight you will never forget. The redfish here receive little pressure when compared to other fisheries and they won’t hesitate to eat anything thrown their way. Catching a hundred pounds plus of fish a day happens often.
Other species you may encounter here in the marsh are Black Drum and Sheepshead. The Black Drum range from 15 to more that 60 pounds, and with the right presentation will eat a crab or shrimp fly/lure. When fly fishing, we use 9 and 10 weight rods with baitfish, shrimp or crab flies. For light tackle spin fishing, we use topwater plugs, gold spoons, and large soft plastic lures.
This fishery is located just 45 minutes from New Orleans. There are many different lodging options depending on whether you choose to stay in the city or closer to the fishing area. I only have a few more dates open this month, but have already began booking dates for next October-December as well. Let me know if you have any questions or are interested in coming to experience the best redfishing in the nation.
