We had a great trip last week!
On August 14 we left Wanchese Harbor on the “Doghouse” just before 3 PM as the storms moved in. The rain hit before we left the sound and headed to the bar. This trip provided 13-year-old Hawkins Groseclose his first trip inshore ocean fishing. Rob and Shannon Harrison (Hawkin’s stepfather and mother joined us) for a great trip in the rain.
Captain Britton Shackelford circled the bar while Austin Shackelford, our mate, kept the lines in the water providing expert instruction to those fishing for the first time. The father and son team got us on bluefish and helped us land a dozen good size blues. Hawkins caught his biggest fish to date and is looking forward to joining us on the Doghouse for a Gulf Stream trip next year.
Of course, all the adults fishing enjoyed the trip and excitement of tight lines and reeling in blues on light tackle. But nothing’s better than taking a youth fishing and sharing your passion for the sport. The bluefish we caught will be brined, smoked, and made into a fish dip to be enjoyed on fall football Saturdays!
If you’re looking for a great inshore or offshore trip, please reach out to Captain Britton and fish with the Doghouse Sportfishing 252-473-8078. We’ve fished with Doghouse Sportfishing for years and learned a lot from the Captain and Mates. This was my third trip taking youth out and getting them hooked on saltwater fishing. If you have some young people in your life, make sure to take them fishing!
