I confess. I am not a wine connoisseur, nor could I even carry on a conversation with a sommelier. I used to drink Boone’s Farm when we were poor as church mice. It wasn’t bad if you got it cold enough and it was 89c a bottle.
So, I’m definitely not qualified to write reviews on wines, except that I know what I like, and I really like some of the wines offered at Aldi’s. They taste good and they are really inexpensive. Trader Joe’s is noted for great prices on wines at $6 and $7 a bottle. Aldi’s has what I consider to be very good wine at only $3.95 a bottle. That’s right, only $3.95.
Aldi’s stocks a California wine called Winking Owl. I buy it in the Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio selections. The Cab is a smooth, fairly dry red wine with a hint of blackberry, plum, toasted oak and vanilla. Personally, I can’t tell if those additives are even in the bottle, but I can tell you it’s a very nice wine to enjoy with a fat ribeye steak. It’s as least as good as any of the Barefoot wines which I have always liked.
We also like the Pinot Grigio from Winking Owl. It’s not too dry and not too sweet. It’s just right for my palette with a hint of citrus, pear and honeysuckle flavors. It pairs perfectly with a thick slab of baked salmon. Aldi’s offers other wines which I’m not familiar with and I’m sure they are priced well.
But for my money, the Winking Owl wines are the best value in wines anywhere.
