Want a shock to your system? Play a public course like Mallard Point in Mooresville (outside of Charlotte) for two days in a row, then tee it up at nearby Trump National bordering Lake Norman. It’s like jumping into an ice-cold pool on a hot August afternoon. It’s quite a shock to your golfing system.
We had a family reunion in Mooresville (about 15 miles from Charlotte) last weekend and all the family that were golfers played a few rounds. The reunion tournament was at Mallard Point, a very nice and inexpensive course. But the greens were slow. Even on a hot, dry day, they were slow. It took us most of the first round to figure out how to putt hard enough to reach the hole. By the second round, I had it down pat and actually sank a few long putts to contribute to my team in Captain’s Choice. Then on Sunday, when most of the family had left, my brother Charlie, a member at Trump National, invited me and my brother-in-law Doug to play a round.
Wow! What a course.
After a couple rounds of thumping the putter to try to get in halfway to the hole, a tiny tap on the ball send it flying across the greens at the Trump course. It was quite an adjustment.
There was also sand involved. Lots of sand, and I’m not very good at getting balls out of sand traps once I’ve knocked them in.
North Carolina has a lot of great golf courses including Pinehurst and Quail Hollow, but this Greg Norman layout is right up there with the best of them.
It has been described as one of the most spectacular and exciting courses in all of North Carolina. More than two-thirds of the holes play directly along or over the water on this beautiful, diverse course, which presents challenges to golfers of all skill levels. The course has exquisite practice facilities and top professionals. It plays as long or short as you want to with multiple tee boxes.
If you ever get the opportunity to play this or any other Trump course, take advantage.
