Two of my regular golf amigos and I made a road trip last week to Harrisonburg. Our fourth amigo, Troy Boor, decided he had rather work for a living and make money than spend a Wednesday afternoon being harassed by his comrades. He’s strange that way, but Greg Lefler, Kevin Mann and I played hooky and headed for Lakeview Golf Club.
I have played Lakeview in the past, but they have redesigned their layout – adding a few new holes while taking away others. They currently offer three, separate 9-hole venues – Lake Nine, Forest Nine and Mountain Nine. We played Lake and Forest, thank goodness, The Mountain Nine, with lots of hills and dales, is the most difficult.
The course was in excellent shape and it offers a really fair test of golf. Most of the Par 4s were reachable with a decent drive and the Par 5s were not overly long. The traps were in good shape with soft, smooth sand. The greens, however, were extremely quick. They may have hosted a tournament recently. I know the James Madison golf teams, both men and women, play and practice there.
As are most courses in the Valley, Lakeview is affordable. They accept VSGA Cards, so we played 18 holes with a cart for just $26. Because the course has three 9-hole opportunities, it is almost always easy to get a tee time.
The course also plays quickly. We completed out round in about 3 hours and 45 minutes. The 45-minute drive from Forest Lakes in Charlottesville took us through some of the most scenic country and farmlands in Virginia.
Will we play Lakeview again? Absolutely. It’s a great place to tee it up. The course is located at 4101 Shenandoah Lake Drive, just outside of Harrisonburg. For tee times, call
