Got to play my first round of golf in 2017 at Old Trail in Crozet. The course was a like a sponge after several days of rain, but the greens were firm – fast, even – and the fairways with all that Zoysia grass were a genuine pleasure to play.
I am not a big divot taker – which is why I probably don’t score well – but on Zoysia, the ball sits up perfectly and you don’t have to take a big divot.
When Old Trail was built, the designers and golf superintendent went for Zosia, even though the seed is quite expensive. Once established, however, Zoysia is easier to maintain, takes less water in the summer and fewer chemicals throughout the year.
Stony Creek in Nellysford also has some Zoysia on their layout – great stuff!
Over Christmas, I played a round with my son-in-law, Brent, in Greensboro. I believe they had bent grass fairways, but it was all mashed down, muddy and a mess. I had a heckuva time getting my iron shots in loft. I skulled more than I would like to mention.
So fellow golfers, if Mother Nature allows a break in the weather as she did this week, play Old Trial and get a perfect lie each time you manage to find the fairway.
