I have come to the conclusion that the very best time of all to take a vacation is the week after Labor Day.
I first realized this about 15 years ago, when we went to Cherrystone Campground on the Eastern Shore. Our daughter, Laura, would be home from California that week and wanted to revisit the campground. Nancy and I arrived on the Tuesday after Labor Day, and it was a ghost town. Nobody was there.
A week or so back, we also took a short visit to Norfolk right after Labor Day and it was the same thing.
Not only do the crowds dissipate, but the rates for hotels and cottages are reduced, there are no long lines to restaurants or shows and the weather is ideal – still warm enough to slash in a pool or in the ocean, but not too hot to get fried if you go outside.
Another big plus – it’s about the best time to fish all year, The bass and crappie are on the feed in shallow water and almost all the species in saltwater are biting.
Next year, take the week off after Labor Day and truly enjoy your vacation.
