In my opinion, there are only a handful of restaurants in all of Virginia that makes barbeque worth stopping by for. I guess I’m a little spoiled, though, raised on North Carolina barbeque. Once you eat that – basically slow cooked pork with vinegar and pepper – the stuff they call BBQ in Virginia is just not up to par. It’s edible, but that’s it.
One of the select few restaurants in the Commonwealth that knows how good barbeque should taste is the Silver Pig in Lynchburg – really Madison Heights. My old hunting and fishing buddy, Courtney Craft, never missed an opportunity to stop by the Silver Pig and take some home. Once, he found out I was going through Lynchburg and asked me to stop by and get a pound or two, but it was Sunday and they were closed.
With the new by-pass around Lynchburg, I don’t get as many opportunities to pass by their restaurant on Amherst Highway, but if I do, I stop in. The Silver Pig makes terrific barbecue. You almost imagine you’re eatin’ down in Wilson, NC, it’s so good.
Folks in Lynchburg also appreciate the Silver Pig, voted Lynchburg’s Top Barbeque Restaurant for the last ten years and counting.
Silver Pig even makes “red slaw”, coleslaw with a little catsup added for color and flavor – a staple in the Tarheel State and a world class addition to a barbeque sandwich.
A single barbeque sandwich stacked high with pulled pork is my favorite, but a real crowd pleaser is the “Dinner For Four”, which includes a full pound of chopped barbeque, four buns and a bag of hush puppies.
Silver Pig also does a Brunswick Stew and their Peach Cobbler is straight out of a Georgia family recipe book. Really good stuff.
Silver Pig is located at 4835 S. Amherst Highway. You can call ahead at 434-846-5676 and save a little time if you know when you will be in that area.
If you like real barbeque, make it a point to stop by the Silver Pig next time you’re passing through Lynchburg. They are open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 till 7 PM, closed on Sundays.
