Going way back in Charlottesville history, there was a restaurant called The Gaslight at 625 West Main Street, founded by John Tuck in 1961. For years, it was among Charlottesville’s finest. John Tuck – everybody just called him Tuck – was always on hand. An eccentric sort of fellow who wore a beret, Tuck greeted each of his guests and went from table to table to make sure everything was just right. If you needed anything, he would get it. The food was perfect, the service was impeccable and it was one of our special places to dine out.
Another great restaurant that we love is Bubba’s Seafood Restaurant in Virginia Beach. Again, the owner is at the front desk checking on things and watching carefully over the service and food. We have eaten there many times and never once have we left disappointed. The Aberdeen Barn is another thriving Charlottesville restaurant where the owners, the Spathos family, are always there.
Last week we ate at another restaurant where the Managing Partner, Michael Newman, was on the front line at the Bonefish Grill in Hollymead. Newman – as do all the Managing Partners in the Bonefish chain – oversees the restaurant’s operations and community engagement, with the location hosting special meet-and-greet events. While we ordering, he was bussing tables, bringing extra plates and keeping things running smoothly. With a packed restaurant, the staff was hustling and our meal was simple perfect. I had the Sea Bass with Crab Meat – outstanding.
Anytime, you visit a restaurant where the owners care enough to be an integral part of the business, you can count on the food and service to be first-rate.
