I drove down to Scottsville last week, and entering the town, there was no Rooster to greet us. The Rooster was the Lumpkin’s calling card. It was gone and Lumpkin’s is gone.
Lumpkin’s was one of the last, great comfort food diners. They had amazing breakfasts, as we often ate there before fishing trips on the James. They had biscuits and gravy and grits and eggs anyway you like them, plus Pancakes and Waffles, French Toast and Corned Beef Hash.
They also had great sandwiches and specials at lunch and dinner. It was always crowded when I stopped there, but no more. I think they have closed in the last couple months. I heard they were trying to find new owners but opening a restaurant in today’s market of limited labor, high overhead and spiraling wholesale prices is not that comforting.
Seems like we are losing restaurants at a fast pace these days. Guess Biden-omics doesn’t work for everybody.
Goodbye Lumpkin’s. I’ll miss you and I know the residents of Scottsville are heartbroken.
