For the last several years when Nancy and I feel the need to get out of town for a few days, we’ve headed to the Deltaville area. We enjoy it because, first, it’s close. We can be in a waterfront cottage within 2 ½ hours of Charlottesville – door to door. There is also good fishing from our own dock and we especially like going out to eat for fresh seafood. There are several really good restaurants in and around Deltaville, but our favorite is a fairly new restaurant, right on the water and surrounded by sailboats – Deltaville Tap & Raw Bar.
We ate there twice last week on our three-day getaway – once for dinner and once for lunch and both meals were incredible.
Some restaurants know how to fry seafood and some don’t. The chefs at the Tap & Raw Bar have it down to a science. Nancy and I like to order their Fried Seafood Baskets, which can include flounder, shrimp, oysters or clams. The seafood is fried to perfection – nice and crispy but not greasy. Their fries are nicely seasoned and crispy. Good cole slaw, too.
But the Piece de Resistance are the Oysters on the Half Shell. They are petite oysters, delightful, and exploding in flavor. The Raw Bar gets them daily from a local oyster farmer in Mathews.
The Bar has an extensive menu for dinner or lunch. I ordered a “Blackbeard” for lunch – a thick slice of blackened prime rib on a bun and it was out of sight delicious.
Consider Deltaville for a quick and enjoyable getaway and by all means stop by Deltaville Tap & Raw Bar for some of the best seafood you’ll ever eat.
Their address is 1134 Timberneck Rd., Deltaville.
