I asked Nancy what she wanted for her recent birthday. She said she wanted me to book a hotel room in Virginia Beach, drive there, spend the night and eat at Bubba’s Restaurant for lunch the next day. And we did. We drove to Virginia Beach following a friend’s funeral on Saturday, stayed in a waterfront room at the Wyndham Hotel that night, then drove to the north end of Virginia Beach the next day and ate at Bubba’s, unquestionably our favorite restaurant in the whole world.
I have written about Bubba’s many times in the past, but it has come to my attention that some of you were not paying attention and haven’t eaten there yet. Put it on your bucket list. It’s the best.
Bubba’s is not next to the water. It’s on top of the water, extending out over the picturesque Lynnhaven Inlet. While sipping on a Bloody Mary (there is no finer at any bar in the country) you watch the million-dollar boats and a few well-worn skiffs heading out for the ocean. The ambiance is unrivalled and the food is even better. Bubba’s serves only fresh seafood, sometimes caught that very morning. Their Fried Oysters and Fried Flounder is always perfect, and that’s what we had on Nancy’s Birthday. Often, Bubba’s offers other fresh catch-of-the-day fish, such as Black Sea Bass, Rockfish, Shark or Cobia. The menu is ever changing.
The servers are professionals. They do things like fill your water glass after a few sips and they check on you regularly to make sure things are okay.
In our opinion, Bubba’s doesn’t get just Four Stars, they get all the stars. How many restaurants are worth driving 180 miles to and from just for lunch?
Just one: Bubba’s at 3323 Shore Drive in Virginia Beach.
