My fellow restaurant scout, Sherman Shifflett, found another interesting “Eatin’ Out” spot over the Fourth of July. It’s called Blue Wing Frog and you certainly don’t run into those every day.
Here’s what Sherman had to say about his experience:
“Generally, Ava and I stay close to home on the holidays, but on July 4, we just took off, with no specific destination in mind. Our travels took us to Gordonsville, then Rt. 231 to Madison and Sperryville.
From Sperryville, we stopped in Front Royal for lunch. We found a restaurant called Blue Wing Frog. It’s a quaint place in an old bakery on Chester Street. The counters and cabinets look like they were made from old barn wood. There was a very tall picnic table inside. They give you a menu to review, then you go to the counter and put in your order.
Everything is made from scratch – condiments too. Ava ordered chicken salad and she shared with me. It was fantastic with large chunks of grilled chicken, with cranberries, celery and bits of apple, and a little mayo. I ordered the grilled chicken over a bowl of mixed greens. It was also very good.
We were less impressed with the sides. Ava ordered potato salad, with large chunks of potatoes and sour cream and other stuff added. That was so-so. I tried the spicy Cole slaw. I like spicy food and love Cole slaw, but this was not to my liking.”
The Blue Wing Frog has a casual, eclectic and fun menu. They offer brunch on Sundays, picnics, take-out or dine-in lunch or dinner. They serve hearty meat dishes but also vegetarian/vegan friendly dishes and lots of entree options. Gluten free, as well.
Here is another review from a satisfied patron:
“We stopped at the Blue Wing Frog for dinner and it was absolutely wonderful. The owners were there, and they made us feel so welcome, almost like family. The meal (Death by Pork) was fantastic. The portions were very generous. I can’t say enough about how good it was. I highly recommend the Blue Wing Frog Restaurant.”
Finally, here is how the owners describe their restaurant:
“Fresh Food. Real Food. Food that is good for you and your soul. Not fast. Not easy. Not cheap. Not fake.”
The restaurant is located at 219 Chester Street in Front Royal. Go to info@bluewingfrog.com or call 540-622-6175 for more information.
“If you are in the Front Royal area have the hungries,” says Sherman, “check it out.”
