One mandatory requirement while in the Land of the Amish is a visit to one of the many restaurants offering a Smorgasbord-style buffet. Though Smorgasbord is a Swedish term describing one of their buffet-style meal the Amish have it down to a science.
This year, we took in that Amish feast three times in three days. We suffered afterwards in pure pleasure.
We had immensely enjoyed one of the buffets last year but couldn’t remember which one it was. On the last day, we found it – Miller’s, on Lincoln Highway in the hamlet of Ronks, PA. It was every bit as good as we remembered and easily the class of all the Amish buffets in Lancaster County.
Miller’s has not one, but two large rooms of buffet tables spread with Fried Chicken, Roast Beef, Hams, Dumplings, Turkey and Sausages. There is a carving station with every possible type of meat. There are scads of homemade and locally grown vegetables along with multiple salad combinations. Enjoy locally baked breads, luscious soups, authentic German potato salad and a dessert section boasting homemade pies and cakes along with cobblers, puddings, and other savory sweets.
I went immediately for their Fried Chicken. We fry pretty good chicken in the South, but the Amish take it to the next level. I devoured several piping hot chicken thighs along with some local Ham Balls and Fried Shrimp. I sampled some stewed tomatoes and other homemade veggies before making my way to the pies. One of my favorites is Shoo Fly pie and I asked for an extra-large piece with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream. I ate every bite.
You can diet when you get home, but while in Lancaster, you simply must make a huge pig of yourself and enjoy some of the best food and cooking known to mankind.
