One of the great reality shows of all time was “Call of The Wildman” staring The Turtleman, Ernie Brown, Jr.
Turtleman, along with his friend and sidekick, Neal James, and Ernie’s faithful dog, Lolly, patrolled the backwoods of Kentucky and other states to remove nuisance species from barns, ponds, and the countryside. Ernie’s specialty, naturally, was catching snapping turtles with his bare hands. It was a corny show, but it was “Live Action” and fun to watch.
And soon, folks in Central Virginia will get to meet Turtleman up close and personal at the upcoming 31st Annual Western Virginia Sportsman’s Show.
The show is scheduled from Feb. 23-25 at the Augusta Expo in Fishersville. Show hours are from 12 to 9 PM on Friday, 10 to 9 PM on Saturday and from noon to 5:30 PM on Sunday. Turtleman will be at the show only on Saturday. But there’s plenty of entertainment besides Turtleman. There will be a live Grizzly Bear show, a live Birds of Prey show, and noted outdoor celebrities such as Joe Zaffuto (night predator hunting), Nick Mundt, Alan Probst (Host of Wild Pa. TV Show), Kip Campbell (Red Arrow) and artist, Jack Paluh.
Neil Selby will offer personal dog training sessions and tons of outfitters will set up shop with information on future hunting and fishing trips. There will be a 3D archery shoot and a trout catch-out tank for the kids.
Ticket prices are $9 for adults, $4 for kids 5-11 and children under 5 will be admitted at no charge. Take Exit 91 off I-64 west of Waynesboro. Go to www.WesternVaSportsShow.com for more information.
