These are not your ordinary, garden-variety animals. These are musical beasts. They play with the Charlottesville Municipal Band and they are eager to perform for you – at no charge. Just don’t throw peanuts at them lest they clog up their tubas. For the 80-member band, the summer season is winding down.
Director Stephen R. Layman recently announced that the band will close out its 94th season Summer Concert Series with a free program entitled “Big Band Memories” on Tuesday, August 16 at 7:30 pm at the Martin Luther King Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School. The program will include popular selections by George Gershwin, Glenn Miller and Fats Waller and feature trumpet soloist Dick Stageberg performing “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” and vocalist Dan Barrale singing the immortal “As Time Goes By.” The program will close with a cross-country celebration of America “Places U.S.A.,” Carmen Dragon’s “America the Beautiful” and John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
Youngsters can visit the Musical Instrument Petting Zoo (see above picture) in front of the stage beginning at 7:00 to find out just how the various instruments of the band work. There is plenty of free parking and easy front door drop-off. For more information, please visit the band’s website www.cvilleband.org and LIKE them on Facebook.
