Neither heat, nor thunderstorms, nor a chintzy Charlottesville City Council (that chose not to help fund the band) can keep the 80-member Charlottesville Municipal Band from their appointed rounds. Those rounds include three programs slated throughout the remainder of July.
Says Band Director, Steve Layman, “All performances are FREE and open to the public.”
On Tuesday, July 19 the band will present “Family Fun Night”, the 4th concert in its 94th season Summer Concert Series. The program will include movie music from Bugs Bunny’s “What’s Up at the Symphony?” to “A Young Person’s Guide to John Williams”. Featured soloists will be flautist Christie Willard and the band’s trumpet trio, the Three B’s: Jerry Barber, Tom Bibb and Don Brubaker. The band will also bring back memories of 1960’s rock and roll with The Doors on Tour. The program will be presented at the Martin Luther King Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School. There is a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo for youngsters of all ages beginning at 7:00 at the foot of the stage and the concert kicks off at 7:30
On Thursday, July 23 the band’s smaller ensembles will perform for Third Thursday’s at Trump Winery from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. The Flute Ensemble, CASE (Charlottesville/Albemarle Saxophone Ensemble), the Brass Quintet and the Rivanna Winds Dixieland Band will play on the back lawn of the tasting room overlooking the 1,300 acre estate. The concert is FREE and audience members may purchase dinner and award winning wines. A portion of the proceeds from food and drink sales supports the Charlottesville Municipal Band.
On Saturday, July 23 the band and its ensembles will present an afternoon of Family Pops at the Sprint Pavilion at the east end of the downtown mall. The program begins with ensemble performances at 12:00 and concludes with a concert by the full band at 2:00 pm. The program will include Music from Despicable Me 2, Pirates of the Caribbean and Anni,e just to name a few. Activities for the kids include face painting, drawing, balloons and our famous Music Instrument Petting Zoo.
