My advice to seniors graduating from high school and college, as well as to newlyweds starting out in life, and to all those buying a new home and to … well everybody in the whole damned world – do not under any circumstances buy a white ceramic stove top.
About 6 or 7 years ago, our stove top went on the blink. It was one of those old electric burner tops that was never level – so the eggs always slid to one side of the frying pan – but it worked for years until it didn’t.
So, we decided to spring forward into the 21st century and buy a stove with a ceramic top. Since we had just painted our cabinets white, and since we had a small kitchen and thought that maybe lots of white would make it look somehow larger, we ordered a white ceramic stovetop from Doug’s Appliance. Every day for the past how-many-ever years, I have scrubbed that white top with every known cleanser known to mankind and it never comes fully clean. There are always streaks and scruff marks and burned-on leftovers. I hated that stovetop.
Then, this week, after Nancy and I came home from a mid-day event, I walked into a kitchen with a black ceramic stovetop. She had given me an early surprise birthday gift and had Doug’s Maytag installed it while we were out.
I felt like the warden had just commuted my lifetime sentence. I was a free man.
Black ceramic stove tops get dirty, too. They just don’t show it.
I will still have the job of cleaning the stovetop. But I when I do, it’ll look clean every time.
