April 6, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The water temps are in the upper 50’s in Virginia and have passed 60 degrees on the Outer Banks. Game on! It’s April and the flounder bite is happening. Some of the best early flounder action always comes from the … [Read more...]

Surfing Anyone?

March 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Going to the OBX this summer? Like to swim in the ocean? So do sharks, like this huge hammerhead caught in the surf this week by Luke Beard at Ramp 49 in Frisco. He caught him on a human toe from the morgue – just kidding. It was a finger. But if you don’t mind swimming with the sharks, jump in. Elsewhere on the OBX, the surf water temperature still hasn’t reached the magic 60-degree mark. It’s … [Read more...]

Saltwater Update

March 16, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The saltwater is still cold, around 50 and under in the Bay, at Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks, but it is beginning to warm with longer days, and the briny action will soon heat up. Speckled trout anglers are doing well in the shallows that feed into the Elizabeth and York Rivers. Soft plastic swim baits and Mir-o-lures are working. The tautog bite continues to be good. Larger fish, up … [Read more...]

February 16, 2023 by Jim Brewer

February can’t make up its mind, as the usual bitter cold has given way to some unseasonably warm weather. The swings make a big difference in what’s biting. The average water temperature is now 45 degrees. Boats fishing out of Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Inlet North Carolina are getting into some nice bluefin tuna action. Charter boats fishing to the south have found lots of smaller bluefin, … [Read more...]

Spades and Flounder

July 21, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Flounder fishing is good. Fish in the 4-6 pounds range have been caught near the CBBT, the Cell and around wrecks. Spadefish are hanging around the CBBT, many ocean buoys and the Light Tower. Anglers are floating fresh clam morsels to them on small hooks. If they are not aggressively feeding, try putting some chum in the water. Water temperatures are in the mid to upper 70’s … [Read more...]

OBX As usual, February is hit or miss for offshore charters, but Tuesday was calm, and one boat sailed out of Pirate’s Cove. The Trophy Hunter hooked, landed, and released a huge bluefin tuna. Virginia Beach Action

November 11, 2021 by Jim Brewer

It’s a good time to be at Virginia Beach. It may not be warm enough to lie in the sun on a beach blanket, but the fishing is red hot. Trout, drum, and rockfish are hitting in the surf and from the piers. Trout and drum are also active in the Hampton Roads area as well as in Northern Neck waters. Rockfish are keeping anglers busy in the Rappahannock, especially at night. When boats can … [Read more...]
