By Dr. Julie Ball As Memorial Day rapidly approaches, the spring saltwater fishery continues to escalate with catches improving most everywhere. Weather is still a challenge, so anglers are taking advantage of any break to investigate this trend. The biggest news is the early arrival of the highly anticipated and controversial cobia. Not expected until closer to June, the cobia showed in … [Read more...]
Cobia On The Way
In late spring, the cobia begin moving up the Atlantic Coast after wintering off Florida and Georgia. Capt. Reese Stecher with Beach Bum Guide Service in Nags Head said the cobia are now in Carolina waters. Most boats are catching cobia in Hatteras, Stecher said, but they showed up this week at Oregon Inlet where only a handful of boats have been fishing. That should change soon, as the big red … [Read more...]
Big Striper in the Surf
From Nags Head, TW’s reports: Surf Fishing: We had fair fishing this side of the Inlet catching Bluefish. The most exciting news we have had in a while would be a 40-lb. striper caught from the Nags Head surf. John Payer from Forked River, NJ weighed in yesterday at our Nags Head store. The winds are NE at 9 and the water temp is 63 degrees. Water is clear. Good Bluefish water. Bluefish … [Read more...]
Drum Biting, Flounder Picking Up
By Dr. Ken Neill III, Both red and black drum are being caught on the seaside of the Eastern Shore. Flounder action is picking up in the seaside inlets and more will begin to target them in the lower bay as what has been a very good tautog bite closed May 1. Some flounder have been caught up in the York and Back Rivers. Speckled trout are being caught in the normal speckled trout … [Read more...]
Flounder On The Way
Dr. Ken Neill, III Anglers are thrilled that the flounder are here and biting, but gusty weather is making conditions less than favorable, and it’s keeping the water fairly dirty. Although flatfish anglers are finding some decent fish in protected areas, folks are working hard for their catches. Some flatties ranging from 17- to 21-inches have come from both the Eastern Shore seaside … [Read more...]
Croaker Bite Beginning
Dr. Julie Ball reports: Gusty winds, crazy fronts and unseasonal drops in temperatures are making it a challenge for the spring saltwater season to come together. Croaker are now available in various areas in the Bay, especially near Willoughby, Ocean View, Little Creek and Buckroe, where pier anglers are using squid and bloodworms. The bigger hardheads are still coming from the lower Bay … [Read more...]
Bluefish Are In the Bay
By Dr. Ken Neill, III Bluefish are in the bay and inside of Rudee Inlet in particular. Anglers fishing inside of Rudee are managing nice catches of blues, some speckled trout, some flounder and croaker. The wind has really slowed down fishing activity. When anglers can get out, tautog action is excellent on structures inside the bay and on the ocean wrecks on out to the Triangle … [Read more...]
Cobia Talk
Dr. Ken Neill, III Cobia is the hot topic right now. They won’t be here for a couple of months but they are on every saltwater angler’s mind. Federal fishery managers have declared that the cobia season will close just about the time our season takes off, June 20. Other states are expected to follow suit, but Virginia anglers cannot see how closing the season after states to our south … [Read more...]
All Puffed Up
Nags Head TW’s reports: On Wednesday, two inshore boats fished and caught puffers and shark. The water temp is 48 degrees. One offshore boat fished and returned early with a few yellowfin. Jennette’s Pier anglers caught skate and dogfish. The sound boaters caught and released stripers on Tuesday. That’s good news. In Albemarle Sound, the limit for stripers is 2 per person per day at 18” … [Read more...]
Togs In The Bay
By Dr. Ken Neill, III Water temperatures have reached into the 50s inside the bay and she is waking up. Crabs are active and now that the potting season is open, getting crabs for tautog bait will be much easier. Tog have been caught on the ocean wrecks all winter long but have been rather dormant in the bay. That has now changed with the warmer waters and structures inside the bay … [Read more...]
